T450s HDD with m.2 SSD migrate to full SSD

My T450s has a 16G m.2 SSD cache and a 500G HDD. It runs windows 10. I want to migrate the HDD to a Samsung 850 pro 1T. Do I need to do anything special besides using the migration software to clone the HDD?

With information collected from internet, I have tried disabling the m.2 SSD in device manager, anti-virus software, and cache on HDD when doing the migration, but still not able to start the system using the migrated Samsung SSD.

The message I got when starting the system using the cloned SSD is something like "Windows has a problem when starting up", and after automatically restarts for a couple more times, it tells me to search "Bad System Configuration Info" on internet and then shuts down.

I have also tried using the recovery usb drive created under the HDD to recover the windows on Samsung SSD, but everytime it says "one partition is missing...". Please help. I have tried so many times and am nearly desparate.

Welcome to the forum!

Sorry for your trouble.

What migration software are you using?

Thanks, Brad.

I am using the "Data Migration 3.0" from Samsung.

I am not familiar with that software.

I do know that I have had 100% success with Acronis True Image.

Get the 2016 version and give it a whirl. The rescue media can boot your ThinkPad and with an attached external hard drive you can create an image of the drive. Install your SSD and restore the image. You may need an external optical drive.

I am not sure how the cache SSD will fit in with the above.

When I moved an X240 from a HDD with cache to an SSD I started from the recovery media after removing the cache SSD.

I could be totally off base here.

Creating an image could be a solution. When I use the recovery drive to start the computer, it did provide the option of restoring a saved image, even though it could not "fix" the problem with the SSD migration.

So I need another USB hard drive to create an image of my current HDD, then put Samsung SSD in the laptop, start it using a recovery USB drive, and then restore the image from the USB hard drive. Is this the right process?

Thanks,

Shawn

Yes ideally that is the process.
