Hello all!

I am considering getting a Tx40p ThinkPad and i have been told you can swap the (horrible) Tx40 series TrackPad with a Tx50 series one.

I found this on eBay which is the cheapest and looks good :

Asked the seller if it was OEM, he responded it's not FRU :

hi
this is the original thinkpad part. but it is not FRU number.

Your previous message

Is this item OEM? What is the part number?

Thanks.
What do you guys say? Is this legit to you? Anything i should be aware of while trying to get a new TrackPad?

Or else, which one would you get and why?

I trust your intuition, i know you guys are the best.

Thanks.

EDIT: I'd like to add, i am used to the double button configuration found on the Tx20 line. I like the bottom button but only the Tx30 series still have them. Any way i can get a set of bottom buttons on a newer model? (Tx40 and up)?

Thanks.

For 107 views with no answers i guess the process should be very easy.

I will edit this post while doing the operation for future references (if there is any complications).

Thanks all.

It's doable.

I've done it on a T440p, and it's a easy process. I believe on the compact T440 there's a little less room on which to operate to replace the trackpad, but it works.

Be aware on the driver. There's 2 providers, ALPS and Synaptics. You might want to do try and error using both drivers to see which driver works.
Mine turned out to be the ALPS, and the only feature is not working which I'm OK with it is that right click trackpad click (bottom right corner) doesn't work.

I am done.

I highly suggest doing this mod. It's easier than expected and the results are stunning.

I found this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuUDayVh_cc

It's good, frame by frame you can clearly see every operation. Just be very careful opening the wrist pad, the fingerprint sensor is attached by a ribbon cable, you don't want to break this.

Otherwise there is about 10 screws to remove to properly do this. First you got to remove the keyboard (the slide trick is pretty slick), then remove all the bottom screws. Then, with a plastic card (like a credit card) it's easy to open the frame. If it doesn't come off easy, you missed a screw.

Also, make sure when replacing the wrist pad, the part under the screen next to the hinge on both sides are properly seated. I realized this morning mine wasn't seated properly.

Other than this, nothing else to add. It's MUCH better. Right now for 40CAD, this is a total killer mod.

Enjoy!
