Can't select 1920 x 1080 on a T540p

Hi,

I have a T540P onto which I recently installed a fresh copy of Win8.1 So far, mostly so good, but there is one nagging problem. The laptop is docked and hooked up to a Samsung 23" monitor and when I right click on the desktop and choose 'screen resolution,' the highest resolution that it will let me choose is 1280x1024. I want to set the resolution to 1920x1080. According to the device manager the display adapter is 'Intel(R) HD Grpahics 4600'. I tried updating that driver and the update was successful but it didn't seem to make any difference. I also downloaded and installed the Nvidia driver from the Lenovo support site but that also didn't help. Actually, though there were no errors, I still see the Intel HD Graphics driver in device manager so I'm no even sure if the NVidia driver was installed.

Anyway, can anyone point me in the right direction here?

Thanks!

Do you have more than one port, like VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt on your dock?
Tried all ports, even the ones on the laptop itself?

Just wanted to thank you for taking the time to reply. I didn't have an HDMI port on my doc and I'm not even sure what the other two connections you mention are. There is one port that looks kind of like HDMI in general shape and on one side but on the other side goes straight down rather than curving from the top to the bottom like HDMI. Maybe that's DisplayPort or Thunderbolt? I'll have to find the model number for the docking station which I purchased used on Ebay and research that.

In any event, I found the problem. I am using a KVM switch to share a monitor between this laptop and another. I swapped the VGA ends and all of the sudden I was able to get 1920x1080 on this laptop but only 1280 x 1024 on the other. So it appears as though one of the VGA ends on my kvm switch is bad. The key seems to be that on whichever laptop is connected to the 'bad' end, the monitor shows up as 'PnP Monitor' while on the 'good' end it shows up as S23B550 which is the correct model number. I guess that one of the pins went bad on that end. Anyway, I'll just buy a new KVM switch.

Thanks again.
