Possible to upgrade T430 to 1920×1080 screen, or other suggestions?

#1 Post by tendim » Fri May 26, 2017 6:00 pm

I'm in the market for a new ThinkPad to replace my aging X200. Primary uses for the laptop:
  • Triple boot Win7, Linux, and NetBSD
  • Linux and NetBSD will be used primarily for development
  • Win7 for moderate to high Excel usage, possibly some light gaming
I am looking at the T430 or T450(p). I'm avoiding the T440 series due to the missing buttons on the track area; we use those models at work and I personally don't like them.

Priorities for the machine (highest to lowest)
  • Screen resolution (mainly because I am developing, so screen real estate matters)
  • Processor (quicker build are more fun! :) )
  • RAM
  • HD
RAM and HD are at the bottom because they are upgradeable after the fact.

That all said, the T430 definitely fits the bill budget wise, however the resolution is lower relative to what is possible with a T450. Is it possible to upgrade the T430 to a 1920×1080 screen?

Thanks,
-10d

At what you're looking at, I would recommend the t450. The screen is so much better than the t430 and the keyboard maybe worse but i wouldn't sacrifice reliability to a mod. The lenovo outlet has plenty of great deals all the time.

Just doing a quick outlet search gives me a 671$ t460s laptop with an i5, 8gb ram, 128gb m.2 storage and an IPS 1080p LCD. Upgrading from an x200, you will almost absolutely need an s series laptop because otherwise you will feel like you added a brick to your bag. Also, GET THE INTERNAL BATTERY. I made that mistake on my x240 and regretted it. The battery life with a slim without the internal sucks.

You can get better deals then this, It's just a waiting game. A good few hundred laptops come in every few weeks. Since I don't know your budget, i can't tell you if this is good or not. Also, a more modern bios will help with triple booting, a feat itself.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Yes, you can convert the T430 to 1080p

Its a bit of work, and you have to buy a converter board off ebay, but you can use the 440p screen in it.

The edp converter is 60 on ebay and the panel runs about 30-40. No shipping or additional costs are accounted for.

Good luck every acquiring a converter board if you don't live in China...

The T450 trackpad will work in the T440 if you want to go with a T440.... isn't hard to replace as I've done it before but I've yet to get the trackpoint buttons to work with the official drivers and just work on Microsoft drivers

Just did it on the Thinkpad Yoga in 5 minutes. Just screws not glue and it only requires removing the battery.
