Help. Thinkpad T430s fails to boot up...

#1 Post by BBKampot » Fri Aug 04, 2017 9:39 am

T430s model 23539KU. bios is 67ETA6WW (2.66). The laptop has been working great since April 2013. I am the original owner. In mid July, it suddenly failed to boot up (though before the failure I've noticed that it ran quite warm). It couldn't boot up with error code pointing to unable to read SSD (Samsung). I took the SSD out and put it into an old Dell Latitude and it started up just fine. I put in another SSD (Transcent) into the T430s and tried to setup Win7 via USB and it failed again. It came up during loading Windows (blue logo) and then it shutdown and recycled the booting process over and over. The same Win7 USB was booting up just fine on the old Dell.

I ran a full diagnostic on T430s and everything passed. I took out one RAM module (8GB) and left just one in (8GB) and that didn't help at all. I took the battery out and that didn't help. I am able to get into the BIOS and make changes just fine. I can force it to boot via USB via F12 but like I said it failed to complete.

Just for kicks, I downloaded a Chrome OS onto a USB and booted it up on the Dell first. It works. When I tried ChromeOS USB on T430s, it again just failed and recycled the bootup process.

Any idea? Motherboard? New bios? There is a new bios out but I haven't flashed it yet.

I hate to give up on this machine because it is still powerful enough for me, with nice screen and it is in good shape. out of warranty.

Thanks.

Nareth

Well, just go ahead and trash that mobo because T430s' have a very high failure for the mobo. Mine died but wouldnt even flash the screen. It justed flashed the light boot sequence a bunch of times.

If you want it you're going to bleed, but that is the price to pay
And you're a very rare mobo, very hard to get
You can see the blinky lights, but you won't get them for free.

Check CPU temps, run memtest86+ for starts.

I finally finished up with running Memtest86 7.4 and it completed w/o any error, running test w/o battery. Highest temp was 93C during Pass 4, Test 8. My T430s has i5-3210M @ 2.50 GHz. From what I read, temp under load should can be in the 80s.

Please tell me what to test next. I'm stumped at this point. I'll clean out the fan next.

That's a fairly hot running CPU (35W).
Clean fan and CPU properly and apply a decent thermal paste, like Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut or Hydronaut.
Since you have Optimus, in BIOS switch to "pure" Integrated graphics, then try again.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

I finally got the chance to take my T430s apart. The thermal paste is gone and the fan and heat sink look damaged. half black and half copper.

Replace your (Optimus) fan with either 04W3487 or 04W3488 and refresh thermal paste as mentioned above.
Those fans are "natively" black and copper, as seen e.g. here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/172835885063
