T430 loose hinge

#1 Post by UnixDude » Fri Sep 01, 2017 3:57 am

Hello

I have a T430 and its been a wonderful machine so far, until I noticed that the left hinge started to get loose. I dismantled the screen bezel and noticed that the knurled brass threaded inserts/nuts (I'm not sure what Lenovo call these) have popped out of the plastic hole. The nuts no longer "bite" the plastic and just spins when I attempt to screw the screws back. Please see photos: http://cubeupload.com/im/4hzqyu.jpg and this http://cubeupload.com/im/EDGKBs.jpg

I've researched on how to fix this and I am seeing various methods. Some use strong epoxy glue but others use something like a plastic repair kit such as "Plast-Aid". Others have simply used longer screws and screwed through the plastic cover and used a nut on the outside to secure it in place. I think this last method is a bit extreme and something I don't want to do. So far it seems my options are as follows:

1. Buy a new/refurbished lid
2. Source new brass inserts (does anyone know the size of these?)
3. Use strong glue
4. Mod the lid and use longer screws

Apart from option 1, which is the next best method? I am personally tending towards option 2 but I do not know the right size or if they are even available or will work. I've looked at the maintence manual and can see that the screws are M2.5mm. So I would assume the knurled nuts would be of similar size?

Any ideas?

Thanks.

From the pics you've linked, it appears that the hinge is broken. Check the cost for a new pair of hinges, then add the cost of either Plast-aid (if the lid is made of plastic) or metal-filled epoxy (if the lid is made of magnesium). If the cost is close to that of an entire lid, then getting a lid would make more sense IMO.

You do indeed need a new left hinge.
You could also use Gorilla Glue, but be careful that the screw holes in the brass inserts stay 'clear' of glue.

There's a lid with hinges, antenna wires, LCD-cable etc. on eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/232453356988

T430 doesn't have magnesium cage inside the lid?

Nope.
But widen your knowledge by downloading the HMMs (and fru_bom list from T/W/Xx30 onward) from all Thinkpads that interest you.
That's why we have that HMM link at the top of each webpage!
