T430s display incredibly dark

#1 Post by toad » Sat Sep 16, 2017 9:29 am

When I switch on my T430s the display stays so dark that I can hardly see the Thinkpad welcome screen.

Anybody any idea what might be wrong with it?

Many thanks in advance!

You probably blew a fuse.
On the T430 they would be near the LCD connector:
- F3 ERBRD3R00X 32V-3A - most likely for backlight
- F19 ERBRD0R50X 32V-0.5A
T430s fuses are most likely the same.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Nice one, thanks!

Postage and packaging is more expensive than the parts themselves which is great news. As for putting them in it is going to be trial and error for me not having done this before.

Probably google a bit for instructions ;)

Piggyback solder the new fuse on top of the old one. Put some flux on the old fuse-ends first.
Or use two pieces of thin wire, put some flux on each end of the old fuse, solder those wires to the old fuse-ends, then solder the new fuse between those wires.
Make sure to properly insulate the new fuse and wires to prevent shorting them!

Hm, I'm less confident now that I know I've got to solder... Is there not a part I can exchange?

Right, as I'm half blind and don't have the steadiest of hands I've had to wait for a young friend of mine to get the right soldering iron etc. Day before yesterday we took the thing apart but weren't really able to locate were to put the fuses.

Any help MUCHLY appreciated :D

Bad picture, but F3 sits near the top, between white triangle and yellow rectangle.
It is most likely green with 2 silver ends and a letter P printed on it.

Sorry about the picture, didn't want to prove that I've got the shakes

That is F3 - any idea about F19?

Like I said before, I don't have T430s schematics, only regular T430.
And if you need to find F19, please post a link to a better picture with more details around that LCD-connector.
But check/fix F3 first, F19 is probably OK.
