Solved: Help diagnose no power on T440p

#1 Post by Whitieiii » Thu Oct 05, 2017 5:19 pm

After switching the motherboard in the T440p I got no power at all I don't really want to take it back apart but I may have to... What else should I do? I don't yet have a battery for this machine so can't diagnose with a battery but what should I look for? Ram tests good in my t440s and power supply works on my t440s I do also have confirmation of the board working before it came to me... the CPU is from the old board so that works also... I changed the bored to get GT 730m graphics and right now my machine is cheaper than most of them with GT 730m graphics from the factory...

Do you have any signs of life at all, is the power button lit? If not you should try and use the emergency reset button along with a power reset. If you still get nothing then see if all the connectors are in properly. If they are, quickly see if your old board still powers as you might have received a dead board.

Where is the reset button? And how do I do a power reset? I'm gonna do a recheck of all the connections... As on the Tx40x when Power is applied the "i" should flash 3 times and I'm not getting that

Apologies! It's the regular T440 that has the emergency reset button, it's used to perform a power reset on the internal battery, but since the T440P has no internal battery it isn't needed. A power reset is when you rmeove all sources of power (charger + battery) and hold the power button (usually a minute) to discharge the system. Hopefully this works for you!

this didn't do anything... I will try the original motherboard again before I say this board is dead..... if the original board doesn't work then something happened with one of the peaces that are easily switchable between two boards.... i'm scared to reflow this new board but I may try it in very last hopes before I send it back... it's a shame that this board doesn't work as I was looking forward to having GT 730m graphics.... I had good luck replacing out a motherboard on an x131e from the AMD and making it into an i3 machine and thought this would be an easy switch but it's turning out to be a task

That sucks, but at least you know that it was the board - good luck getting a new (working) one. :thumbs-UP:

Ok got the new board in and I'll confirm with you we have power now... That's good but I don't get any video output on the internal panel and don't get any output via VGA... does the computer require a CMOS battery to be installed to show anything? I don't have it hooked just for testing... I'm getting tired of waiting for shipping to get more boards but if I have to get another one I will

I baked the new one and switched the ram around and now this board works... Don't know what one of the two worked but now I'm in the process of reassembling the machine

Looks like this issue is solved and it is working perfectly (for now) I chose to go with Windows 7 for better compatibility with older games (although I loose my forza but idc) tested it out last night and I'm surprised the GT 730m is more powerful than I thought and can run all my games between 35 and 45 FPS while still looking good.... I was gonna go with a higher res screen but I think I'll keep it 1366x768 because higher res screens will require more from the CPU and GPU and I think I don't wanna loose anymore FPS
