[SOLVED] [T430s] advice for new batteries

#1 Post by whqdz » Fri Dec 08, 2017 2:28 pm

Hello,

I'm going to US in two months, and I plan to buy stuff for my T430s that is from US too, because it's a lot cheaper that in Europe.

I would like to buy a bay battery (43) 3 cell because I never use the DVD reader, and why not a new 82+ primary battery (mine is used, 76% of capacity).
My currently life time for a "full" battery is around 2h30, with TLP well configured, running on linux and with a "normal" use (programming 80% of the time).

Do you have any good advices to share with me? May I find brand new batteries for a good price?
I can buy on ebay if needed, i've a post adress available in US.

The only reliable source of good new genuine batteries is Lenovo, and their prices are never good...

You may be lucky finding a somewhat aged, almost unused genuine battery from a private seller who got one by mistake, or is getting rid of spares because his laptop died or something like this. But you have to constantly scout eBay for it.

There are sellers in the US who sell rather cheap used genuine batteries. I found these:
Battery 81+
Battery 43
Battery 43 (2)

If you want genuine batteries, don't be tempted buying from Chinese sellers. The stuff they advertoise as "genuine" and sell for $30-50 new are also knockoffs and forgeries.

It's still interesting, many people sell 2x and sometimes 3x the price that we find in US, even for used stuff.
Honnestly, I would be happy if I can win 2-3hours of battery.

My bad because some weeks ago i've found a really good deal on ebay for brand new genuine batteries but I wasn't able to pay it at this time and the offer doesn't exist anymore.

I'll keep taking a look every weeks until my departure, and hope to find a good deal :)

Thank you!

Just for saying some news: the 3-cell battery i've bought on ebay has increased my battery life from 2:30hours to 5hours.

It runs on a FHD T430s with brightness at 50-60%, on mint 18.2 KDE, wifi always on, tlp settings, with graphic effects, intel hd graphics, a 500go hdd 7200 and 12gb of crucial ram at 1,35volts (pc12800).

That's not the battery life of a 9cell battery but it's just perfect for a computer that I don't use everyday :)

Replace the HDD with an SSD.
Or add a small mSATA SSD in the WWAN-slot for your Linux, and use the HDD for storage.
Set the HDD to power off after X minutes of non-use.
In both cases battery time will improve even more!
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Replace hdd to an ssd is the step that i've already plan for next month eheh.
BUT, your idea of a mSATA ssd in the wwan slot is really interesting. I'm going to check more infos about that. Thanks for the advice!

I post news as soon as I did that!

I finally had a really nice deal for a samsung ssd so I keep the msata idea for a further system.

I order to give news: I passed from 5hours of battery to 7-8hours with low brigthness, linux mint mate, turboboost enabled. It's around 6Wh on idle (a lot better than with the 1st gen i5 from my x201 that is around 7-8 on idle and turboboost disabled).

If I use aIDE no stop with low brightness and turboboost enabled, I got 6 hours of autonomy.
