I use a T430 as my workhorse daily use machine, and I travel 200+ days per year.
It's a Core i7 with 16GB of RAM, and i run Win7Ultimate and VMware Workstation (I have need of running up to four images simultaneously). I have a 1TB SSD as the boot drive, a 512GB mSATA SSD which serves my VMs, and a 2TB HDD in an Ultrabay. I normally don't need optical media any longer.
The machine has been 100% solid for me until recently. It's suddenly decided that the Ultrabay-mounted HDD wants to be 'removed' frequently, and tells me it can't be. Which is fine, because I don't *want* it to be removed.
I have checked and double-checked that the HDD itself is snug in the Ultrabay adapter (it's a genuine Lenovo adapter, BTW -- no cheap knockoffs here!) and the adapter is snug in the bay (which is seems to be). I have to assume that there is a mechanical issue with the Ultrabay connector now, after 5+ years of everyday use, which is unfortunate.
Before I go doing surgery on this machine (which is set up *exactly* as I want it, I'm very happy with it, and don't want to change anything unless I *have to*), I wanted to poll the forum to see if there were alternatives or any input from someone else who has experienced a similar issue.
One thing that crossed my mind was to see if there was a firmware bit that could be flipped for this device so that it was no longer marked as 'removable'. I know there are utilities out there for some USB flash drives -- but nothing, apparently, for situations like mine.
Or, if there is a simple mechanical fix to the connector itself, I'd be interested in that. I would like to keep the removability for those rare times I need the optical drive, but they are becoming rarer and rarer...
Thoughts? Suggestions? Is there a later model that will accommodate a similar setup, in case I am forced to upgrade? This has worked so very well for me (did I say that already?) and I hate the thought of having to change it...
Thanks.

Maybe reseat it a few times and/or clean the contacts thoroughly.

Re: T430 Ultrabay HDD getting 'removed' frequently
Have a look at the Power Plan settings.
I just picked up a T430 and one thing i seen was the dvd burner was powered off.Every time i start the system it's on. But after 5 mins or so it powers off.
Might be a setting to keep it powered on all the time.
Worth a look...

If you have another Ultrabay adapter I suggest to try it to see if that one has the same problem.
Since this setup is working so well for another suggestion would be to find another like T430 and move all your memory and drives over.
There are probably some T430's available on your favorite online auction site. Fairly inexpensive at this point in its life cycle.
