T440p CPU Upgrade suggestions

#1 Post by Whitieiii » Fri Feb 02, 2018 4:22 am

I've put it off for too long but I'm in need of a faster CPU for the T440p it's my gaming machine and want to know what I can use for the CPU? I've got an i5-4300m in it now but when gaming I'm pegging out at 95-100% usage all the time even with 12GB ram and GPU usage only at around 30% it's lagging quite bad most of the time but still quite playable.... I'm only playing older games like GTA V right now so no worry but what should I get? should I go with an i5 or i7 dual core with a high clock speed or should I just go with an i7 Quad Core with a low clock speed? I want to spend as little as possible... I'm thinking of going with a i7-4610M, i7-4700MQ, i7-4702MQ or i7-4712MQ.... what's going to be the best of the bunch or What others should I consider? I'm trying to stay at 37W TDP if possible as well but I may have to go with a 47W TDP.... I just don't want the machine to heat up any more than it is and throttle putting all the extra performance in the trash

suggestions or comments? i'm ready to buy something now

I did the i7-4700mq upgrade. It works superbly. Also, 16gb/RAM.

The i7-4700mq, is the most common CPU in it's class. There is a good reason for this... It's a fantastic CPU, and it more than handles a variety of games. You can pick up one off Ebay fairly cheaply. Mine came out of a broken Y410p with a bad MB. I recommend the upgrade. You don't need to upgrade the fan either.

Use good thermal paste, and you should have ZERO throttling issues. Some T440p models came with that processor, a 1600x900 display, and a backlit keyboard..... ALL good upgrades for your T440p. All are easy to do.

Mine has all of these upgrades, it works perfectly, gives me no trouble, and is my daily driver.

One other recommendation... Use Win8.1, and "Classic Shell". it works best with it. I've used Win7, AND Win10 both, on this computer, and 8.1 just works best with it. I believe Win8.1, was the native O/S for most T440p's anyways.

I am considering the CPU upgrade as well now. Currently, have the i5 4300.

For those that have done it, I see the biggest bang being going from 4300 to the 4700 at about $65. Is the 4900 worth it for another $60-ish on top of that, or is it diminishing returns?

*** Edit *** Went with the 4700mq. Figured that almost falls into "impulse purchase" range and will give a nice performance boost.

My T440p also has the i7-4702MQ, but I have no problem getting into the BIOS with F1 at boot.

Blame Micro$haft's W10, because it doesn't fully switch off when you shut down.
Remove the HD/SSD to confirm.

Unless you fix it in the power options. (Click 'change settings that are currently unavailable' then untick the 'Turn on fast starup' box; need to check after major updates that it didn't get reset.)
If I click 'shut down' I want to SHUT DOWN NOT HIBERNATE (which is basically what 'fast startup' is).

Is it worth getting the i7-4800mq? Or will it be an overheating mess in the T440p chassis? If I TDP limit it to 37W would performance be similar to the i7-4702mq and i7-4712mq? The latter two being way more expensive 37W quad core processors.

You decide: https://versus.com/en/intel-core-i7-470 ... -i7-4800mq
4800mq is also more expensive than 4700mq.

Fixing that in the settings didn't give me the option to go into bios... even removing the hard drive didn't work... if I want to go into bios I need to put back my i5 CPU and change settings and put my i7 back when I'm done as it's not an official CPU for the T440p

In the US, a 4800mq can be had from $50-70. That is as cheap, if not cheaper, than a 4700mq. As far as price it's one of the better deals. I'm more concerned about the thermals in the T440p chassis, especially since I only have the iGPU heatsink.

For me it’s clearly the 4610m. Although it is only 2 core 4 thread, it is very fast single threaded (faster than any i7-47xxm!), cool and low power.
