T540p: Aftermarket FHD IPS Panel for HD model?

#1 Post by Heemag » Sat Feb 17, 2018 9:43 am

Hello,

I was thinking about getting the T540p since I'd like to have a numpad and a DVD R/W drive.

The one I have in sight comes with:
i5-4300M
8GB DDR3 Memory
500GB HDD
1366x768 HD panel
in good used condition with renewed keyboard and trackpad
1 year warranty (excluding battery)
price would be 400€ (inc. tax)

At that specific shop, a model with similar specs but a FHD (TN) panel would be 500€ (inc. tax).
The 3k display isn't available.

Now I was wondering what options I would have if I decided to buy the model with the TN display and would like to replace it with a FHD IPS display.

I read that the panel mounting, the hinges and cable positions are different between the HD and the FHD/3k displays, so you have to replace almost the entire "display frame" (the Lid).

Are there FHD IPS displays out there that would be an easy replacement for the HD panel? (With identical mounting.)
Or do you always have to replace the display frame?

How do I find displays with good quality that would fit? Can anyone recommend specific panels from his own experience?

Sincerely

Ive done it with an X240. Its not hard, nor tome consuming. Just make sure you find a reputable seller.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

Heemag, did you ever get part numbers or successfully do this?
I just purchased 2 T540p units (no secondary GPU) with the TN "HD" LCDs and would like to find a FHD IPS that would work. Most sales I see on ebay state their screen only works if it is replacing the same type (maybe just to cover themselves).
I will try to insert a photo here of my LCD label but if that does not work the model # is LP156WH$ (TP) (P2) and a p/n SD10A09793
I see some info here on doing it on a W540 but not sure the numbers would be the same.
Help from anyone on model numbers and/or US venders would be appreciated, Alex

Whatever works in W540 will work in T540p as well. Do bear in mind that what works in previous generations (T/W 510/520/520) will NOT work in your machine.

Good luck.

Thanks ajkula66, I see at least one ebay seller does say his LCDs work in a T540p but if you have the TN panel now, you have to purchase almost a complete lid assembly. That puts it out of my price range. But there may be other options.
