T440s Bluetooth drop-out

#1 Post by A31 » Mon Mar 05, 2018 10:52 am

Hi all,

I've got a T440s which has some Bluetooth issues. To summarise a long story basically the Bluetooth tends to work for a little while and then drop-out completely (it's no longer detected in Windows 10 and the Bluetooth system tray icon is removed), but if I restart the machine or uninstall/reinstall the driver in Device Manager it tends to work again.

I was having this issue quite frequently when I had the 'Sierra Bluetooth Driver' installed which I got from Lenovo System Update and my machine would blue screen quite a lot with errors and files relating to network drivers. I completely reformatted and reinstalled Windows 10 a couple of weeks ago and didn't install this driver (I just used the one Windows 10 automatically got for me) and I've not had any blue screens since but the Bluetooth still keeps disconnecting periodically. Maybe once every 4-6 hours. I looked in Device Manager when it last stopped working and there was a Code 10 error (device power failure, reinstall device driver). So I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver in Device Manager, it said there was an error installing the device (Code 18) but it seems to be working again.

My current driver for the Intel WLAN-AC 7260 card that I have in this T440s is 20.10.2.

Any suggestions? If the WLAN card is faulty would this replacement be compatible with my machine? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Dual-Ban ... -band+7260 I guess any Intel AC 7260 card is compatible?

Cheers!

I don't know if the T440s has this but does it have the hardware shut off for the Wireless modules? Could that be going bad? Contact cleaner on the bluetooth module?
Probably should be Thinkpad16by10.

Looking For: 386 laptop, IBM or not.

Cheers for quick response and by the way I have just noticed that I've posted this in the wrong forum section (sorry!)

Looking online some people say to see if the option to disable the Bluetooth when running on low battery/power etc is enabled by default and disabling it fixes the issue, but I've disabled all of that and it's still dropping out.

When I next get the chance I'll inspect the module and go from there, thanks. Could it be a faulty module? Seems I've tried various software configurations.

Latest BIOS is also installed.

Wi-Fi performance is absolutely fine too, just seems to be Bluetooth issues that I am having.

While just about any card, (even sound cards, Ive seen it) can die, I doubt yours is faulty. It just doesnt seem that probable for a 4 y/o card to die. I'd reseat it first, clean the connector, check the antennas, and all those thigs before you spend money on a card that likely works fine.

Thanks. Rubbing alcohol OK to clean contacts with? I've got a bottle of something like that back at home - forget exactly what it is though (will check when I am back).

I think so. Also, the pins on the module are more likely to be corroded than the pins themsleves. Be careful w/ the pins in the socket, they can be damaged easily. Cotton fibers from cottonswabs could prevent contact on the pins. Also, a few insertions and removal can help clean the pins. The connectors are designed to do that

I was using the machine today and for the first time since I reinstalled it on February 25th or whenever it blue screened - just a few seconds after my Bluetooth mouse stopped working. This reminded me that I needed to find some time to open the machine up and reseat the wireless cards, so I did that tonight. I reseated the Intel 7260AC card and the Sierra Wireless AirPrime EM7345 card. Booted the laptop up and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi both seemed to be working fine so I shall keep using the machine with my Bluetooth mouse and see what happens.

The latest BIOS is installed and was downloaded straight from Lenovo's website so should be fully compatible.

Also, when the machine was first blue screening I thought the memory was bad so I ran Memtest on it for 30 hours and it passed every test, so I'm pretty sure it is either WLAN card driver or WLAN card hardware-related.
