[T430s] WWAN ----> mSATA advices

#1 Post by whqdz » Wed Mar 07, 2018 6:33 am

Hello :)

According to the idea of a mSATA ssd at the place of the wwan slot, I did some researchs and I would like to get more infos in order to do it good (my previous post: viewtopic.php?f=68&t=125173 ).

First, is the wwan slot the slot where it's written "C4M" at the top left of the picture? https://imgur.com/a/v7anW

Any mSata SSD should work on the slot or should I check more specific details?
Do I need any adapter to fit it the slot?

About the partition, I plan to do a fresh install of linux, should I put the /home in the HDD in order to save the SSD as it's best? Because if I want to keep the HDD for storage, I just need to format the HDD partition as an external drive, right?

Thanks in advance!

Yup, that's the slot.
Any drive like this will fit in there: https://s7d2.scene7.com/is/image/Samsun ... tails-jpg$
No adapter needed.

How you partition your drives is entirely up to you.
With the OS on the mSATA, the storage main-drive can be partitioned however suits you best.

Thank you for your reply!

The link doesn't work here, it displays "illegal character" :)

I'm thinking about another thing: I guess the mSata drive will be known directly by the computer, but i'll need to format it first if I want to install linux on it. So, once I've put in on the slot, do I just need to boot on my HDD where linux is already installed, format the msata with gparted (for example in ext4), and then boot on my homemade .iso and install it on the mSata. Once the OS is full installed, I just need to erase the HDD partition and make it as an external storage drive, right?

EDIT: the link works well now, the $ wasn't linked by the forum. 250gb for the system is too much for me if I keep my HDD. Is this msata ssd should work with the same compatibility? Kingston SSDNow mS200 mSATA 120 Go ( https://media.ldlc.com/ld/products/00/0 ... 5074_2.jpg )

Link fixed.
I only showed that picture so you could see what type of connector is needed on that mSATA (newer WWAN slots are different).
Any size mSATA will do for Linux, even a 16GB.

All right!

I'm going to buy it as soon as possible next month, and then I keep once i've done all the switch of my system.

Thank you again, I really appreciate your help :)
