T430 BIOS update 2.75 (Spectre)

#1 Post by thinkquan » Thu Mar 22, 2018 2:39 pm

System Update is pushing out BIOS 2.75 for my T430. It appears to be related to CVE-2017-5715.

For those of you that have applied the update, what are your experiences? Are there any significant performance changes on your ThinkPad?

Google has not turned up much on user reports for this BIOS update. Should I apply this now, or wait for more reports on it?

I inadvertently updated the BIOS via "Lenovo System Update". The T430 (2349KAG) has very slow performance now, operating Windows 10 (Version: 1709, Build: 16299.344). The response and boot up time is significant slower since the applied update.
A rollback to older BIOS can't fix the performance issue.

cheers,
Mike

**EDIT**

I was able to get a workaround to fix the massive performance issue:

1st: Open a CMD (command promt)

2nd: type in the 1st command and press enter:

Code: Select all

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" /v FeatureSettingsOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 3 /f
3rd: type in the 2nd command:

Code: Select all

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" /v FeatureSettingsOverrideMask /t REG_DWORD /d 3 /f
4th: Last, but not least: Reboot your PC
Please keep in mind this will disable the spectre fix buildin into Windows.

#Testet on Windows 10 Pro x64 (Version: 1709, Build: 16299.344)#
##############################################################

To reactivate the Spectre patch paste the following lines separated into cmd:

Code: Select all

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" /v FeatureSettingsOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

reg add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" /v FeatureSettingsOverrideMask /t REG_DWORD /d 3 /f

Thanks for this!

Does the Lenovo BIOS update make updates to Windows as well? Or is the Windows Spectre fix something that is issued separately through Windows Update?

From your report, it looks like the BIOS + Winodws fixes are not playing well with each other. Did you measure your before and after boot times?
