T440p RAM upgrade

#1 Post by umbe1987 » Mon May 07, 2018 2:58 pm

Hi everybody.

Just bought a second hand T440p and I am super happy.
I am planning to buy fill the empty slot of RAM with a 1x8GB (the other slot already hosts 4GB).
As I am not that expert, i am in doubt on the type of memory I should buy.
I saw the official specs at https://support.lenovo.com/it/en/solutions/pd100280 and I found this on ebay: https://www.ebay.it/itm/1x-8GB-PC3L-128 ... Sw5nxaYq-X.
it seems what I need, but the "for samsung" is confusing me... The specs seems right to me, do you have any thought?
Sorry to ask such a basic question, but I am not a fan of buying online, especially when it's from that far from my house and I don't know exactly what I am buying

It's not going to be limited to just Samsung notebooks. Maybe that's a typo or something. It matches your specs and I'm pretty sure one of my own machines has exactly that RAM installed too.

Thanks, I thought so but I wanted to be sure.

This is samsung OEM memory good for any notebooks also, You can also choose to get one made by Micron, Crucial, Hynix as well.

Why not go matched set of two 8GB modules not just one to your 4GB so you can preserve the dual channel mode which is very helpful for *both* integrated GPU and CPU. 4GB and 8GB will not enable dual mode.

Thanks. Wow, didn't know I can't dual mode with two different slots... already bought one 8gb because of my limited budget. Does this mean I cannot get much increase having 12gb RAM or only dual mode (which I guess would lead to the question "what is dual mode exactly?") :D
Also, do the two slots need to be exatlctly the same (e.g. two from samsung same as the one I bought) or it's only a matter og matching the GB? I guess the former, but I might be wrong.

Dual mode is not that important. I doubt in normal usage you'll ever notice dual mode. I've mix and match memory size and chip all the time. 95% of the time there's no issue at all. If your budget is tight, 1 additional memory will not be a problem. Others will tell you that unless you buy brand X, on the 3rd hour, 18 minutes, 43 seconds of a second blue moon during the alignment of Mars and Venus relative to Pluto that the world will end.

Ok thanks for clarifying.

For the sake of (my) knowledge, RAM in dual channel mode can be activated only if the following requirements are met:
  • Same memory size (e.g. 1GB + 1GB)
  • Same DIMM configuration in both channels
  • Same configuration in symmetric memory slots
It is not mandatory however:
  • Same brand RAM (which asnwers my question)
  • Same tech charachteristics
  • Same speed (MHz)

May work with different OEM names of different memory modules even they are same memory capacity could have different timings but test well. And measure graphics performance with one, two matched and two different capacity like 4GB and 8GB and you will see different numbers on performance for graphics especially on integrated GPU built into CPU.
Also mixing different OEM names may have memory chips on each modules are different timings requirements.

This comes from my 29 years of computing and I find working with matched in both OEM brand and model number memory in a pair or in quad modules (for computers which have 4 memory slots) offers much better reliable computing and does not corrupt data (important!). And I do see difference in windows even play back and smoother scrolling not just for heavy graphics.
