Upgrade bios or not?

#1 Post by defc » Sun Jun 03, 2018 4:08 pm

I am a new T430 owner (bought used). The bios on it is of course quite old. In the past I've had a pretty bad experience trying to update bios on a laptop, it was a Dell and bricked even though I followed all the steps.

Everything is working on my laptop. I am also a bit concerned if the fixes for Spectre/Meltdown have reduced performance? Given all this should I update bios or not bother? And what are the chances of bricking?

While I have upgraded BIOS on several computers, both ThinkPads and others, even un-official modified BIOS, I have never bricked a computer. Still, my policy is, unless there is a benefit from the upgrade that I need, or a problem that an upgrade will fix, I stick with what works no matter how old it is.

Upgrading the BIOS is normally a straightforward process, just ensure the battery is well charged and the ac adapter is connected, but as the previous poster put if everything is working OK it may be best to leave as is.
