Connect T440p to T61 display panel?
The title probably gives away where I'm going with this.
Except for the display and keyboard, T440p is better than a maxed out W701. Weight of 2.2Kg vs 4.1Kg plus light and cheap 90W PSU vs heavy and expensive 230W PSU.
The T440p is the right size (horizontally 2mm bigger than required) to take a 15.0" UXGA display. The case will need to be enlarged (height) by a couple of inches (~5cm) to accommodate.
What I can find is that the T440p display is only 3mm deep while the 15" LED display is 7mm deep. But plastic is much easier for a hobbyist to change than circuitry.
Just like stretching a Hummer into a Limo...
Laser cut two cases, and plastic weld back into one?
The 730M video card in the T440p is on par with the Quadro FX3800M of the W701.
The slowest i5 4200M CPU puts out a TDP of 37W yet is 25% faster than a 3GHz T9900 of 35W.
For lower heat, the fastest "cold" 4 core CPU is the i7 4712MQ 2.3GHz @ 37W TDP which is about equal with an OC QX9300 which standard puts out 44W, and lots more when OC.
Best potential CPU of the T440p is 50% faster than the best you can put into a 17" 16:10 W701
(wiki: 3.1Ghz TDP 57W ark: i7 940XM OC@ 4.1GHz)
(wiki: 2.13GHz TDP 55W ark: i7 4940MX OC @ 3.5Ghz).
The T440p takes 32GB memory, has SATA3, USB 3.0, and probably upgradable to USB 3.1 with mini PCIe card.
So... what about the screen? Electronically what does it take to add a "better" screen to one of this "new-classic" machine?
After searching around a bit (all the wrong places?) I was unable to find specific details on pinouts or socket for the internal video connection of the T440p vs the T61. So I decided i'd better just ask here

Re: Connect T440p to T61 display panel?
T440p uses eDP (embedded DisplayPort) connection to LCD.
T61 uses LVDS connection to LCD.
Not compatible.

As far as I am aware, the Haswell platform supports up to 8GB per DIMM, so the T440p supports up to 16GB of RAM. You can however use up to 2133MHz memory clock.

Nope, the 4th gen. i3/i5/i7-4xxx series can take up to 32GB.
Re: Connect T440p to T61 display panel?
Perhaps they could if they had 4 SO-DIMM slots.
Unfortunately, the T440p has only two and is therefore limited to 16GB of RAM:
