T440s - trick need to power on
T440s - trick need to power on
Hello everyone. first time poster long time thinkpader
I have a t440s running windows 10. I have run into a wall with it; problem being it will not power on most of the time without a little trick. this problem has grown in frequency to almost every day now. First occurrence was about 5 months ago and has been increasingly an issue.
This problem was documented extensively in several forum posts (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T ... 310#M92983). Basically you come to your laptop and it with not power on, no sign of life, plugged in or not. The described fix is to disconnect both batteries, internal and external momentary and wallah it powers up no problem. Well that was fine, until it happened again... and again... and again. I got tired of pulling off the lower case, so the internal battery just remains disconnected now just for ease to get back up and running. Now i pull the external for a few seconds and it powers back on every time. the laptop has never powered down during use, this only occurs when i put it in sleep or shutdown. Its pretty annoying.
All the should be drivers are up-to-date. Did a bios update last night, already had the issue pop up twice today. Does anyone have a idea what is going on with this thing. Can it be fixed?

Re: T440s - trick need to power on
I had a similar problem with my X220 after spilling coffee on the keyboard. It would only power up after disconnecting all batteries. But it would only do this one time. Replaced the keyboard and problem solved. Can't say that is the same issue as you are having, but perhaps it is.

Re: T440s - trick need to power on
Are both batteries genuine Lenovo, or is one or both a genuine Chinese knock-off?
W10 has a nasty habit of not shutting down but to go in some slumber-state.
Have you tried Live-Linux?
I suggest to get Slax from https://www.slax.org/ as you can run it from a small USB-key.
Boot that 2 or 3 times, to check if the problem persists.

Re: T440s - trick need to power on
Yes they are both genuine. I think they are still the original batteries. Interesting point on the operating system, I didn't consider a software problem. I'll run Linux off the USB as suggested see if the problem persists. Thanks.

Re: T440s - trick need to power on
Nope still pulling the battery pretty much every time I use it. Interesting about the keyboard. Another poster above mentioned the same. I'll likely pick one up soon and give it a shot. Let me know if you have any luck. Thanks
Re: T440s - trick need to power on
Yes happened to me a couple of times always the trick is to remove the battery, to prevent this I'm always removing it after I use it. I haven't look yet for another solution I might also try the keyboard solution mentioned above.
Re: T440s - trick need to power on

Re: T440s - trick need to power on
Hi guys,
has anyone tried to update the bios?
I'm running linux so i'm not able to test a bios update easily, but the Lenovo Vantage (running only on windows) has a tool to check for any update available and to update the bios.
Would someone ilke to give it a try?
Thanks

Check the version in your BIOS by pressing F1 when booting.
Check for latest BIOS update here: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds035967
Use an external USB CD/DVD-drive for that.

Re: T440s - trick need to power on
Bois is one of the first things I have updated to troubleshoot. I am fairly certain some component on the motherboard has failed. This is one of those problems I have zero evidence that anyone has solved the issue. I was going to try running Linux on it but now that I hear you are it likely a lost cause. I honestly went back to my x301 running manjaro, only use this guy when needed.
Re: T440s - trick need to power on
A guy in Reddit said:
"Hey seems like I finally found someone with the same issue, yeah I got the same problem, funny enough even with the motherboard replaced (for a different reason: failed bios update) still having this issue, currently I am in the process of buying some new batteries for it, since the t440s I got was for free and was the reason why they gave it to me."
Of course i've tried to change the battery (a friend of mine has lent me for a while his t450s battery), and of course whitout success.
