Processor upgrade with T440p
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what the fastest processor is that can be used in a T440p is? I'm curious to see how much I can upgrade this baby.

Re: Processor upgrade with T440p
That would be either i7-4900MQ or i7-4910MQ (or i7-4760HQ).
See this: https://www.notebookcheck.net/4910MQ-vs ... 596.0.html
The MQ models are socketed, the HQ model needs to be soldered, so is not really a contender here.
They'll work, but they are still not really suited for a 14" laptop, as they run rather HOT.
You'll also need a 135W charger with those.

Re: Processor upgrade with T440p
There are some HQ models available that are soldered onto a PGA946 adapter, to enable installation on socketed boards.
There's one particular success story, with an i7-4980HQ (the one having Iris Pro Graphics 5200 with 128MB eDRAM) running in a T440p: https://old.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comme ... pro_works/
However, before you get too excited, there's horror stories as well: https://old.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comme ... om_taobao/

Re: Processor upgrade with T440p
Thanks, I was wondering what is the fastest CPU I can put in a T440p while still being able to use a 90W power adapter? I don't really want to shell out the extra money for a genuine power adapter, those things are expensive!RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Fri Jul 13, 2018 5:26 amThat would be either i7-4900MQ or i7-4910MQ (or i7-4760HQ).

Re: Processor upgrade with T440p
Does your t440p have the Nvidia discrete graphics option? It is my understanding that a 135W charger is only necessary if you intend to run a quad-core processor with the discrete graphics option.sebileis wrote: ↑Fri Jul 13, 2018 2:25 pmThanks, I was wondering what is the fastest CPU I can put in a T440p while still being able to use a 90W power adapter? If you don't, I believe a 90W would be sufficient.

Re: Processor upgrade with T440p
Mine does not have the discrete GPU option, only Intel integrated. So the 90W power adapter will probably suffice?CompanyChoam wrote: ↑Sat Jul 21, 2018 1:47 pmDoes your t440p have the Nvidia discrete graphics option? Re: Processor upgrade with T440p
Use an i7-4702QM or i7-4712QM, they are only 37W TDP.
The i7-4900QM is 47W, too hot!

Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.
The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

I couldn't tell you for certain but you are probably right.
You will make it throttle, fry, and blow dry!

Re: Processor upgrade with T440p
The difference between the 4702 and 4712 CPUs is only 100Mhz base and turbo clock so either one is fine.CrazyTPFan wrote: ↑Tue Jan 01, 2019 12:04 pmI'm probably going to buy a 4702MQ that I saw on Ebay for $75.00.

Re: Processor upgrade with T440p
Just to add my £0.02, I have a 4700MQ in my T440p, and it seems to be absolutely fine thermally.
At idle, the temps are exactly the same as the i3-4100M it replaced, which is as expected really. I'd imagine Haswell probably power gates all but one core when idle anyway, so there wouldn't be much difference.
Under light load, such as General browsing, YouTube, that sort of thing, it's about 5-10C warmer than the i3, but still only gets up to about 55-60C (not bad for double the cores/cache, and a 700-900MHz clock bump) on my fan profile, which admittedly favours silence - the fan is off until 55C. So far it's only ever gone up to level 2 vs the i3's level 1. I haven't had the chance to really stress it hard, but I doubt it will struggle to stay cool. I imagine it will be like my T420, and get pretty toasty, but still stay the right side of Tjmax.
I seem to remember somewhere that the T440p had up to a 4900MQ as a factory option, so I shouldn't worry too much about the extra 10W

I have the i7-4702MQ in my T440p and it's running awesome I've got the GT 730m graphics as well and run off a 90W genuine lenovo power supply... I don't have a battery in my T440p quite yet so it's pulling all power off the wall socket but it runs just fine even with the GT 730m going full power.. i find my i7 runs cooler then my i5-4300M as well so that's a plus... this computer runs so good but the GT 730m is becoming too weak for my needs
