T480 FHD Touch Display Dark Spot

#1 Post by nxsh » Wed Aug 01, 2018 6:20 am

I noticed recently that my (not even 3 months old) T480 with the FHD touch display has a small, circular dark spot in the top right corner area (see diagram below).

Code: Select all

Screen
  +--------------------------------------+
                       +----+
  | | | |
                       +----+
                      Dark spot

  +--------------------------------------+
It is quite faint, and I am struggling to take a photo that shows it, hence the diagram. If anyone has any tips on how to take a good enough photo of it, that would be great.

I have noticed recently that Lenovo has been very poor with their depot repair services. I have seen posts and articles about people sending their devices for repair and receiving them back a month or more later with the problem still there and the laptop damaged further - which is making me worry about sending it off.

(I am in the UK if there is a difference in service quality to the US or Europe)

Because it is a minor issue I worry that it will come back in a worse condition than it is now, I keep my machines in great condition and even the smallest scratches are very noticeable to me.

It is my only machine and I use it on a day-to-day basis so sending it off would be a huge inconvenience.

The way I see it, I have two options:

1. Send it for repair, ask for the WXGA UHD display to be fitted instead due to the inconvenience of needing to send my 3 months old £1600 daily use machine away for weeks/a month or more

2. Return it and get a refund (does this warrant a refund?)

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Wrong forum but:
- get a backup, buy some used Core2Duo or newer Thinkpad that can take 4GB minimum for at least 200€ or a used desktop for at least 100€ with monitor. Always have a backup PC that can do what you need to do for a 1-2 weeks while your main PC is being repaired or replaced.

Take it to service and talk to them. If they will swap screen, they may not do so great job as it's not easy and low salary laptop technicians are not good. Or they might just swap the entire lid - in this case have it swapped.

If you can return it for refund do so.

If not decide to either live with it or sell it and buy something else.

Thanks for the advice, I'll see if I can get a refund for it in this case then.

For some reason I never actually thought about buying a backup, I'll look for a cheap ThinkPad, and apologies if this is the wrong forum, do you know a suitable one?

IIRC You posted this in the wrong "ThinkPad T400/410/420 and T500/510/520 Series" Forum.
I moved it to the correct Forum "ThinkPad T430/T530 and later Series" (that's what Utwig meant).

Ah I see, thanks. I'll make sure to post any other queries about my T480 there.
