T520 battery in T530

#1 Post by wujstefan » Mon Oct 15, 2018 3:33 am

I have an old but very good shape T520 battery. These physically "fit" but it does not mean they work :)

Is there any reason these are not working other than sales? :)

The *30 series introduced new batteries with special chip to enable fast-charging. The *30 firmware will not charge a *20 battery (although it will run off it).

The same EC mod that allows a classic keyboard to be used can also be utilized to disable this check, and allow *20 batteries to be charged.

I guess performing the controller mod just for the battery would not work properly unless the classic keyboard is used as well?

Nope, you can do just the battery-mod with EC for all xx30 Thinkpads.
I have it on a self-booting USB-stick, so I don't need to install Linux first.
My current X230 has that EC battery-mod (and an X220 batt.), but is otherwise standard.

Great, thanks. This spares me lots of time :)

EDIT: other than that: T530 battery is backwars-compatible with no mod needed I presume?

Correct.

Hate to say, but can't source the code...
May I ask users who done this to upload the modded files and share them? I'm only looking to enable the battery.

Download the .ZIP from: https://github.com/hamishcoleman/thinkpad-ec and read the Readme under it.
After unzipping it on your drive, you'll find some sub-dirs with xxx.xxx.img.d
In the matching sub-dir, check the last file-extensions.
If you want ONLY to remove the EC battery-check, you must add .OFF to files 001 - 005 and remove .OFF from 006.
Now go do your Linux stuff.
Unfortunately I don't see T530 in that group, unless you can also use either T430 or W530.
Ask forum-member hamish.

For people who just want the battery-check removed from ONLY the X230 (no other models!), go here: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comme ... _batterys/
I have downloaded, checked and used the Google-file in the first post. It is OK, no malware. Ignore all the other dummies posting there.
Make your USB stick and off you go.
Like I said, this mod ONLY applies to regular X230, nothing else!
