T440p ERROR 2101: Detection error on ssd1 (M.2)

#1 Post by kaddafi88 » Sun Oct 21, 2018 12:07 pm

Hello everyone!
I installed 240gb in my t440p ssd in slot m.2. I put Windows 10, everything works fine, but when you turn on the laptop, every time a message appears in the BIOS "2101: Detection error on ssd1 (M.2)".
This is a big problem, I can not use the sleep mode (the laptop just hangs on this error).
I tried different versions of the BIOS, the results did not work.
Please tell me what else you can try?

What brand/model SSD? AFAIK the only makers of 42mm M.2 SATA SSDs are the OK Transcend and a few 'not recommended' others.

Did you test with the SSD and no HDD? Did you do the install on the SSD while the HDD was installed? (These probably wouldn't have anything to do with that error but just want to be complete, making sure it's not a bootloader issue.)

It was KingSpec, but a couple of days ago it failed. Its size is now 132 kb.
Today I bought a new disc Transcent MTS420 for 240 GB. The laptop does not see at all. I am disappointed not to understand the reasons.

You need a SATA M.2/NGFF SSD, not the very similar PCIe M.2 NGFF.
T440/T440s/T440p need the 2242 type with a B-key.
E.g. this will work: MyDigitalSSD 240GB (256GB) Super Boot 2 (SB2) 42mm (2242) SATA III (6G) M.2 NGFF SSD Solid State Drive - MDM242-SB2-0256

I would have expected the MTS420 to work; that's a SATA drive (3D NAND version of the MTS400 I have).
Might have some other problem than a bad/wrong drive. Maybe the M.2 slot is damaged or something.
Does the laptop work fine with nothing in the slot?

Any Update on this thread?

Was it a dodgy card? Dodgy Slot?

Dodgy BIOS??

Or the card is simply incompatible?

The reason for my asking is i have the same laptop and the same card OTW. but now i am concerned this card is incompatible.

T440P SSD in the m.2 slot seems like quite a lottery :(

anyways, The card i just pressed the buy button on on ebay is:
https://www.transcend-info.com/Products/No-766

Listing: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRANSCEND-MT ... SwqMpbmNpO

As you can see there is NO MENTION of NGFF on the listing only m.2 ssd sata 3 bus. so it should work .. but i am scared now :(

NGFF "Next Generation Form Factor" is just what they called the M.2 slot before it was standardized and some places still use it as a keyword for searches.

OK,

Thanks for the info.
The card i am refering to says "Space-saving M.2 SATA form factor (42mm) for ultra-compact computing devices"

Does that mean it should work on thinkpad?

The xx40 Thinkpads need the Transcend MTS400 Series drives, NOT the MTS420 Series, which have a RAID-engine.
The MTS400 works there without problems, e.g. this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075P1JSGL/re ... UTF8&psc=1

I believe MTS420S has now been reported to work in T440p. It doesn't have DRAM cache like the MTS400 so lower performance but there is now an MTS430S with DRAM and a 512GB version like the MTS400 (also much longer write lifetime than 420S). I plan on trying it as soon as Amazon gets it in stock.

Can you confirm the MTS430S is working fine in the T440p?

I'm looking to upgrade and just want to be shure before I order one myself.

Yes, it works. My CrystalDiskMark tests show it roughly 10% faster than the MTS400 (smaller margin for seq read since that is so close to the SATA bus limit).

I use this in both my T440p, as a boot drive, and as a supplement drive in both my W540's

I've found them to be very compatible, and reliable. Went in, works with no problems:

There is a 240gb version of this card also, that works just as well.
