T480, undervolting how to?

#1 Post by MortySE » Tue Nov 06, 2018 5:29 am

Dear all,

I'm very much new to this -- but I'm getting a second-hand T480 and I'm looking to make it my personal computer for the next 4-5 years.

To that end I'm thinking about "undervolting" as a means to reduce fan noise a little bit. But I don't know how it's done.

Is undervolting useful? Which software is preferred for doing undervolting (beginner friendly, stable)? Would you tweak a personal use T480 in this way, or in any other ways?

Thank you very much! :)

Yes, it is useful for reducing your processor's power consumption and temperature output, though not every processor is guaranteed to undervolt well. Some processors undervolt excellently, and some processors undervolt horribly.

Throttlestop is the preferred software to use for undervolting, but you would need to look for a good guide to use it on your T480's processor.

As I don't have a T480 for personal use, I can not really comment on that. Maybe, someone with a T480 can share his/her experience on that part.

That's brilliant, just the answer I needed to get unstuck. Thank you very much!
