CPU in T440p

#1 Post by Whitieiii » Wed Nov 14, 2018 6:26 pm

I know it's not officially supported by Lenovo but would it be possible to get an i7-4702MQ or i7-4712MQ working on a T440p? I only ask as if I find out what's best for my usage (higher clock speed vs higher core count) I might go with one to reduce heat and/or power usage.. although 4th gen CPU's are still quite expensive for my liking

Those are both 35W TDP CPUs, the most powerful you can use without "overheating" the machine.
Priced from ~$75 and up.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
Lenovo: X240, X250, T440p, T480, M900 Tiny.

PS: the old Boardroom website is still available on the Wayback Machine

But those would work in the T440p even though it didn't come with either of those from Lenovo?

Yes, they'll work in the T440p, but NOT in T440 or T440s.

For what it is worth, I recently purchased a 4702mq, and upon doing the swap from the base i5, was met with the 'power LED blinking 3 times' issue. I checked the FRU of the motherboard and I don't think there should be an issue there. I don't have a good battery for the machine yet, and my AC adapter is only 65W, so I hope it is an issue with the TDP increase and not a motherboard or CPU issue.

I did go with an i7-4702mq it's the same TDP as the i5-4300m i took out.. the 3 quick flashes of the power light is normal for both the T440p and T440s when power cable is applied (happens sometimes at button press, just press the button again) also you've to be patient with it on startup as it won't show the Lenovo logo on screen and will be black until you get to the windows login screen with the i7-4702mq but other than that mine is running perfect with no problems at all... After i get a 9 cell battery mine will be all complete... I've got dedicated graphics as well so I'm running a 90w power adapter but i run 90w adapters in all my machines anyways as they are the same price on eBay as 65w adapters especially if you get the round plug adapters (t430 and older power supplies)

The i7-4800, and i7-4900 are both faster, and cheaper, better clock speeds, and won't overheat your T440p. Both are natively supported by the T440p.

those will overheat the T440p no questions because they are over 35W tdp... the 45w tdp cpus don't do well in the T440p even if officially offered from Lenovo

Then explain why my T440p, with i7-4800 doesn't overheat, or throttle. I play games on it. It still doesn't get overly hot, or throttle. I re-gelled it when I got it, and cleaned the fan real good. It does NOT overheat. I know others with this same CPU, and they don't have heating issues either.
