T430 dual display problem

#1 Post by olddog » Fri Dec 28, 2018 7:51 pm

I have a fairly basic T430 with integrated graphics and a 1600 x 900 screen.

When I bought it a few months ago (my first Thinkpad!) I hooked it up to an old monitor I had lying around, and found that the colours were all wrong. No amount of fiddling with the controls made things better so I decided the monitor was past its sell-by date and ripe for replacement.

Today a new, fairly cheap, but well reviewed, 24 incher arrived. Full of expectation I connected it to the T430 using the DVI port and found the colours were exactly the same as on the old monitor - terrible.

Hugely disappointed, I connected the new monitor to my T61, via the VGA port, and found the colours were fine.

So what's going on? The colours are fine on the laptop's own screen, but not on the monitor. Is this a known problem? Is there anything to be done? It's a great shame because up until now the T430 seemed to be faultless. In fact, I have been so impressed that I have already bought two more Thinkpads.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Given you have the Intel Graphics machines...go into the Intel Graphics settings. There should be every color option in existence to fix it. There might have been a tweak put on the internal LCD to make it look better.

Also please post a pic of how the colors look to help determine the source of the problem.
Thinkpad4by3's Law of the Universe.

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

I did compose another message to say that I was unable to upload pictures, but it seems to have got lost in the ether.

But since then I realised that the T430 doesn't have a DVI socket, but it does have a (mini) displayport socket. It was a bit surprising on reflection that anything was coming through the DVI port on the dock, so I ordered a displayport cable, and now the monitor is working fine.

Maybe the dock's DVI port has a problem.

Or the DVI cable itself is bad.

The DVI cable certainly used to work.

But the question is, would you expect to get a good signal through the dock's DVI port when the T430 doesn't itself have such a port?

Yes; the DVI port on the dock is nothing but a DisplayPort with a built-in passive adapter.

I see. Thanks.

Fortunately it doesn't matter as it works flawlessly using the displayport cable. One of these days I shall try to isolate the faulty component.
