T470s Battery/Power Issue

#1 Post by dylanb02k » Sun Jan 20, 2019 9:34 pm

Weird issue that I've started to have with my T470s....

Whenever I unplug the power source it shuts off immediately. If I turn it on with battery, it seems to work normally.

There also appears to be a similar issue where it turns off the moment it switches from Battery 1 to Battery 2 (which seems to always say 90% and not charging).

Any ideas what I could do to debug this?

Welcome to the forum. :)

I suspect Battery 2 may be faulty. Is there a way in the BIOS to disable it so you could test this theory?

I selected "Disable Built In Battery" in the BIOS and you seem to be correct. Now if I unplug the machine, it doesn't cut out. There's a note that the battery will be re-enabled on connection to AC Power, does this mean I would have to do this every time?

Hard to know. I must confess that I am not experienced enough with how these dual battery algorithms work on modern Thinkpads.

In any case, it is probably a good idea to replace the faulty battery.

Yep. Actually seems to have fixed the AC Power issue after that tweak in the bios (even though the 2nd battery displays again).

I installed the Vantage software to track the battery and battery 2 does display as poor condition.

Will a 2 yr Lenovo on site warranty cover battery issues? Or am I going to be on the hook to buy my own.

Shouldn't that T470s "act" identical to a T25 with dual battery?

Well, TP25 is like T470 (one internal, one external battery), not T470s (both internal); however, the algorithms are probably similar, I just never tested them.
