T450 speakers rock!!

#1 Post by Thinkpad4by3 » Fri Mar 29, 2019 12:27 pm

I know TPs aren't generally known for their sound systems...but if anyone wants a newer TP with a good set of audio, go right for the T450. Literally probably one of the best audio systems in a laptop I've heard in the last 5 years. Dolby Advanced Audio really gives these speakers some punch...and you can crank it right up and it sounds great. I might record some audio samples later on my good microphone next to like a T430 and show the difference if anyone wants to know(though you will need an good audio system to get a realistic expectation of what it sound like)

The efficiency of two screens equally sized with equal numbers if pixels are equal. The time spent by a 4:3 user complaining about 16:9 is proportional to the inefficiency working with a 16:9 display, therefore the amount of useful work extracted is equal.

This is good to know, but is the T450 of yours able to match or even beat the W700's sound quality? I'm curious.

Well I can put them side by side if you would like? Probably edge still the T450...but the W700 is still good. If I can get Dolby Advanced on the W700, then the W700 would probably win.

If there is any specific songs/audio files you would like me to play if you want a comparison, just tell me.

That would be great, but since you already provided a comparison, I think that is not needed anymore.

Thanks a lot, for going through the trouble of recording the sound. I don't mind Iron Maiden, by the way. As long as it is not some song that belongs to today's Billboard Top 100 or similar, it's fine.

Most of the songs that are released these days... they give me the urge to slot my head into a guillotine.

I needed an excuse to pull out my microphone anyway  . Yeah I feel the same way about anything remotely popular released in the last give or take 10-15 years.

I believe most machines with starting with the T440 or T450 has Dolby, though in my personal opinion the T450 sounds a tad better than the T470...but thats mostly just opinion at that point. Also the T450 and T470 have downward firing speakers so the exact placement matters. I have a desk with a top shelf an when I docked my T450 with the speakers hanging off the edge firing down at me, it sounded much better than just on a bed or something where it gets muffled.

Can second that, but that applies to most of the 10/20/30 series.

I just tuned my AC/DC louder.

That gave me a good hint. I own a couple of workstations of that era right now (M6400, M6500 and M6600 from dell, 8710, 8730, 8740 and 8770 from HP and W700 from Lenovo). I wonder how all the other 17-inchers perform in the terms of audio.
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

Can I transplant T450 speakers into a T440P?
That sounds like a worthwhile project, if possible.

If the speakers in the T450 are the same as the T460 (I see no reason they wouldn't be) then this post just baffles me. The speakers in my T460 are just plain awful, Dolby Audio notwithstanding!

It's not just the speakers that determine audio quality in any audio chain.

You also have to consider the quality of components in the D/A converters and the audio amp.

True, but in a laptop, you get what you get. I think the D/A converter and amp would have to be pretty bad before you could hear any difference through those awful Thinkpad speakers!
