Charger for T440p quad core upgrade

#1 Post by finn49 » Wed Apr 03, 2019 4:33 pm

Hello,

I have just purchased a ThinkPad T440p i5-4300M and it is going to be delivered on Monday. I have also ordered an i7-4712MQ to replace the CPU. However, I have heard that it may be necessary to replace the charger if I swap the CPUs because it requires more power? Although they do both have 37W TDP. I asked the seller to send me a picture of the current adapter and they sent me this. I looked up ADLX45NCC3A and 45W chargers come up, which seems quite low. I've heard that the chargers go up to 135W. Is that true? As far as I know the laptop has no discrete GPU.

So, do I need a new charger and if so, which one should I buy?

Thanks.

90W is enough for that.
You could get one with the 'regular' round-barrel plug and get a round-to-square plug adapter like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/223385374715

I have done exactly the same. With the new CPU, I needed a bigger psu adapter. I chose the 135 watt unit as there was very little difference in price and the 135 has more performance available in case you keep modding. Your local electronics store probably has what you need and in my case, it was a bit cheaper.
