T440P m2 SSD Recomendation/Confirmation Please
T440P m2 SSD Recomendation/Confirmation Please
Hello,
I have been planning to add a 240GB/256GB SSD to the spare M.2 Slot on my motherboard (2242) - T440P
I have narrowed down my options to some options:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-TS24 ... ers&sr=1-2
https://www.amazon.co.uk/KingDian-240GB ... ers&sr=1-7
https://www.amazon.co.uk/XuBa-Solid-Lap ... rs&sr=1-57
The XuBA Drive and Kingdian drives are £10 cheaper than the transcend, and all m.2 2242's with SATA 3 interface are more expensive than standard SSD's.
I just want to check: A) will all three of these drives work, or will i face dificulties with them working?
and B) is thr transcend that much better than the cheaper ones? They are all low cost brands as far as U know?
Thanks very much.

Re: T440P m2 SSD Recomendation/Confirmation Please
Transcend is definitely better and worth the extra cost.
But also consider replacing the CD-drive with an adapter for a second 2.5" drive, such as this: https://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.ph ... f0c7089aa5
I have one of those for my T440p.

Re: T440P m2 SSD Recomendation/Confirmation Please
Thanks for your advice, My current setup is:
ultrabay -> 2TB seagate barracude hard drive
Msata 256GB SSD (Had one spare)->Sata enclosure->Standard 2.5inch slot
M.2 Slot (Empty)
I plan to go to:
ultrabay -> 4TB seagate barracude hard drive
1TB SSD->Standard 2.5inch slot
M.2 Slot (Transcend 256GB SSD)
because i am trying to max out the performance of this laptop.
Unfortunately i do not have a Nvidia graphics card version, otherwise i would love to do VFIO on linux.
Also processor is i7-4712MQ and ram is 16gb and lcd is 1080p. The only other upgrades i can think of which are not urgent are backlight keyboard + t450 trackpad (but not in a hurry for this -> i tend to use a wireless mouse anyway)
ANy other tips please?
I have ordered the transcend, but i have read on another thread it might not work in the SATa 3 slot

Re: T440P m2 SSD Recomendation/Confirmation Please
A friend of mine uses that same Transcend in his X240s, which has the same M.2 slot as the T440/p.
I take it you have wifi Intel 7260-AC+Bluetooth 4.0?
I run W7-Pro (soon to be replaced with Linux Mint) on my T440p with i7-4702MQ, Intel GPU, backlit KB, FHD and a 90W charger.
'Only' use a 250GB SSD in main-bay and 500GB HDD in Ultrabay, since I also have a 3.5" external drive (1.5TB) for extra storage.
All in all I use maybe 20% on any of those drives.
Also have a 40A2 dock, for when I will ditch my desktop (as soon as I sell my house).

Re: T440P m2 SSD Recomendation/Confirmation Please
Hiya, I actually have a Dell DW1820A Which I replaced the intel with, because unfortunately the Intel wifi is not compatible with MacOS
This m.2 thing is quite new to me because my last laptops (DELL) had an:
Msata SSD,
mini-Pcie Wifi Card.
I did not do my homework before buying this laptop, because i expected to just use my OLD SSD & WIFI card with this laptop, but i had to change everything
So I am not really sure about m2 SSD's as i have never used one.
Although, looking back, I think its a very good laptop when fully upgraded with 3 drives and max ram/lcd.
I also had to get a dock, because the MacOS mode does not output to VGA screen!

I have one of these. I had it in my T440p for a few weeks. It's now in my W540.ameeno wrote: ↑Wed Apr 17, 2019 4:21 amHello,

I find no fault in it, and the data rate is outstanding! I recommend it.

i7-4700mq
nVidia GT730m graphics
16gb Corsair "Vengeance" ram
500gb Samsung EVO 860 SSD
1tb HGST 7200rpm HDD in the drive bay
240gb MyDigital M.2
Win8.1Pro (*VERY* tweaked, and trimmed)
This setup, is about as fast as this computer gets, unless you upgrade the processor (It came with an i5, but I had the i7-4700, I got out of a Y410p that was busted beyond repair). It's a beast!
You'd be surprised at how much gaming you can do, with a little "graphics tweaking" on the HD4600 on-board graphics.
I actually removed half the ram, the SSD's, and now has 8gb Samsung PC3-12800/RAM, and the HGST, 1tb HDD, as I plan on selling it.
Re: T440P m2 SSD Recomendation/Confirmation Please
Hi Dragunov
That sounds awesome.
Thanks for the info, it sounds like i am quite close to maxing out the laptop.
OK So:: I took the plunge and purchased a Transcend m.2 SSD 420S 240GB from ebay for £30.00
It worked straight away and was detected under my t440p.
I did have to make it GPT under disk Utility in windows but it works fine & great it seems.
https://i.imgur.com/IqBTzPQ.png
thats the crystal benchmark, i think its faster than my Msata-> Sata SSD convertor (My current main boot drive)
Now i have not tried booting from the m.2 ssd just yet, but I expect it to work fine as its detected in bios correctly.

Re: T440P m2 SSD Recomendation/Confirmation Please
The "MyDigital" M.2 SATA was the boot drive in my T440p. VERY fast. I highly recommend.

New option now available: Transcend MT430S
Basically same as MT420S except it has DRAM cache, higher speed rating, and is available in 512GB capacity. Also seems to be lower cost (only $80 for 512GB on Amazon).

Re: T440P m2 SSD Recomendation/Confirmation Please
Looking for m2 2242 ssd for my t440p as well, but I'm confused: All the ones on this post have 2 notches in the card, but the slot on my 440p looks like it will only take a card with one slot (there is only one divider on the slot.) Also, the specs for the t440p say it is a b key card, but I have yet to find a card with a single slot. Am I missing something?

Re: T440P m2 SSD Recomendation/Confirmation Please
The two notches on the card means it works on both B-key and M-key M.2 slots. The Transcend MTS430S mentioned a few posts earlier has two notches, and is confirmed to work on the T440p.thelash wrote: ↑Sun Jun 20, 2021 3:31 amLooking for m2 2242 ssd for my t440p as well, but I'm confused: All the ones on this post have 2 notches in the card, but the slot on my 440p looks like it will only take a card with one slot (there is only one divider on the slot.) Re: T440P m2 SSD Recomendation/Confirmation Please
Update if anyone still following this thread - I bought a transcend MT430S 256gb m2 2242 card for my T440p and cloned my win10 setup across from my existing hd using their software. All went well, I am now booting off this card and things are going really slick. Was a bit concerned about posts in various forums of m2 cards running hot in the t440p, but I have found temps in the range 40 - 75 C which is the same as when I was running a 2.5" ssd. I do not do any intensive work (eg compiling, video editing etc) so have left plans of putting a heatsink on top of the m2 card for now.

the Transcend SSD's controller chip. I haven't tried it yet but, inspired from some videos about cooling SSDs, I figure if I put it onto the controller chip
(with a thin layer of thermal paste in between), it should keep the SSD cool.
