I intend modifying this laptop and have purchased most of the parts. I'd like to do it all in one go so my remaining question is about the motherboard.
"Dual core Intel Core i5-4300M (-MT-MCP-) / arch: Haswell rev.3 cache: 3072 KB / flags: (lm nx sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 ssse3 vmx) bmips: 10376clock speeds: max: 3300 MHz 1: 979 MHz 2: 1373 MHz 3: 1372 MHz4: 1304 MHz".
I want to get at least a 4-core however I have been cautioned that heat could be a problem. Is there a 4-core motherboard that works at an acceptable temperature?

Your basic/main choice is either switchable (nVidia) or integrated (Intel) graphics.
Any T440p mobo can take a quad-core CPU.
Recommended (while TDP=37W): i7-4702MQ or i7-4712MQ.
All other Quads have TDP=47W, which run hotter.
Check out The Boardroom for Parts, Mods and Other Services.
Covid-19: Mask it or casket.
I don't recommend anything faster than the i7-4800mq, though.
