T460 power adapter voltage

#1 Post by sktn77a » Wed Jul 31, 2019 3:43 pm

So, I'm killing some time reading through the T460 HMM and see that the test for the AC power adapter is to put a multi-meter across the outer, square, metal cladding and the inner "point" which should produce 20 volts. My HP and Acer adapters produce the requisite 20 volts but the Thinkpad adapter produces zero volts! The adapter charges the T460 just fine so it's clearly working. I can only guess that there is circuitry inside the adapter which only permits a voltage when it is plugged into the computer. Is the HMM is incorrect(?)

Oh, well, never mind. I blew up the picture of the power plug in the HMM and the +20 volt terminal is on the inside of the plug (not the point, which is neutral).

Mystery solved!
