Configure T490

#1 Post by JoelShum » Tue Sep 03, 2019 3:03 am

Is this overkill and a waste of money? I do research work (reading documents, listening to conference calls, web searches and writing reports and building some complicated spreadsheets basically) but like state of the art toys. Having said that I'm not gonna be playing games on the laptop. Maybe watch some YouTube and NetFlix.

I have an i7 Thinkpad with 16 GB of memory and an i5 Thinkcenter with 16 GB of memory.

Either CPU will do what you want. 8 GB is likely to do your load. I typically am using 4 GB out of 16 GB and the extra memory is for virtual machines.

I would definitely get a 512 GB SSD drive. It is a pain to change for a bigger one (inevitable with the passage of time) and I have not used less than 512 GB since 2009.

The rest of it looks fine. I use an AC card in my laptop and have an AC router to power it.

If you like state of the art toys, I'd use the savings on the machine to bump up the specs

i7 9750H hex-core processor, and as was mentioned the 500GB SSD.

The i9 processor would be an option too.

We usually buy a total of two (2) AC power adapters for the notebook computer, to save on daily commute travel weight.

ie: One at office, and one at home.
Daily Driver: X1 Extreme 1st Gen (X1E1): i7 | 16GB | 1TB | IPS
Current Thinkpads: X1E1 | X1C4 | X1C3 | X250 | X230 | T410
Retired Thinkpads: T42 | 560 (circa 1996)
