[SOLVED] Pimped T440p and heat
Hi RealBlackStuff,
My mods are quite similar to yours (CPU, RAM, SSD, Ultra bay. It brought the standing temperature to around 53C...which is OK. I then loaded an M.2 drive in the spare bay and the temperature stablised at about 63C. My electronics background informs me that heat and electronics rarely mix, so I took it out.
Question: is there a way to fit an external heat sink as the thought of listening to a whirring fan doesn't fill me with joy.
Question 2: I have my replacement screen waiting to be fitted. Is there a way of increasing the performance of the graphics hardware to give the pale graphics some 'zing'? I know any solution will involve heat production and that's why I asked question 1.

Re: Pimped T440p and heat
Under normal (for me) load with only a browser (Waterfox, with never more than 6-10 tabs), email (Thunderbird), Windows Explorer, Office 2010 Excel and/or Word, Foxit PDF reader and occasional Windscribe VPN open, my average temperatures run between 37-48 C.
Occasionally I get a spike in the 50s, but that's about it.
Currently I'm using Hydronaut thermal paste. For a next time I have Kryonaut ready.
My T440p has only integrated GPU with integrated fan, which I hardly ever hear.
Apparently the discrete fan might have a slightly better cooling.
You could also try undervolting with Throttlestop:
https://thinkpad-forum.de/threads/20182 ... dervolting
http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads ... de.531329/
As for screen, mine has the FHD LG LP140WF3-SPD1 with 125% scaling under W7-Pro/SP1 64-bit.
I don't need any improvement, but applying a profile might bring some for you, see https://www.thinkscopes.com/2014/08/24/ ... thinkpads/

Are you saying that Kryonaut/Hydronaut could make a difference of 10 degrees C?

Re: Pimped T440p and heat
Compared to run-of-the-mill stuff, yes.
Kryonaut is not cheap, but currently the best non-metal one.
Kryonaut: thermal conductivity = 12.5 W/mK (= Watts per square meter of surface area)
Hydronaut: tc = 11.8 W/mK
The run-of-the-mill Arctic Silver 5: tc = 6.0 W/mK (less than half...) And takes 200 hours to settle in, YIKES!

RBS, top of the mornin' to ya,
Back to heatsink issue. I'm toying with the idea of fitting an external heatsink via a copper cable out of the ventilation holes at the back. Am I dreaming or do you think it's possible? I don't intend to move the T440p from this desk.

In other high-powered laptops, some have attached additional copper plates to the heatsink, increasing its heat capacity, and lowered temps as a result. They're usually attached using thermal epoxy, though if you want to be able to remove it later, a 50-50 mix of regular thermal paste and thermal epoxy could work.
A more drastic mod is a watercooled setup, like what this guy did: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhw1n1N0hD0.

Re: Pimped T440p and heat
For one, I never play games on a laptop, nor do I run any 'intensive' programs on it.
That's what I have a desktop for.
Secondly, if temps are too high, check/clean the fan and replace thermal paste.
If still too hot, try undervolting.
If still too hot, flog it.

Re: Pimped T440p and heat
Hiyall,
I installed an 'Opolar' exhaust fan on the output vent. There was a dramatic temperature reduction. From ~80s to ~30s. Problem solved!
No need for heat sinks, internal fans, etc.
This is what such a cooler looks like:

Good for you to have found it.
But it really does not solve the basic, underlying heat problem.

Peter Linu, do those types of coolers you posted there actually help with heat?
