T440s broken trackpad

#1 Post by dumfug » Mon Sep 09, 2019 3:15 pm

hi all,

the trackpad and trackpoint of my T440s stopped working on my machine. They don't show up when I execute xinput or search for them in the /proc/bus/input/devices file. I verified that they are enabled in BIOS and also tried booting from a Linux live system with the same result.

Hence, I think there is most probability a hardware issue. I believe I may have caused it myself when I was going through airport security and took the notebook out of the container there was a electrostatic discharge. The notebook was only in the standby mode at this time.

Do any of you guys have any idea what the next step should be for diagnosing/fixing the problem? I already checked, and it should be possible for me to replace the trackpad. However, I am not sure if this will actually fix the issue as I might have fried something else on the mainboard.

First try the Reset button.
If no luck, remove/disconnect power, both batteries, wifi (and wwan) cards.
Then press and hold down the Power button for 20 seconds.
Connect only AC, try to boot. Add other items again.

If you need another one, consider replacing that clunkpad with a T450 touchpad+buttons.

ok, I tried that but it didn't work for me.

I already ordered a replacement T450 trackpad and will try to install it. I let you guys know if this fixes the problem for me.

Not a clever thing to do!
Always switch it OFF when you go flying and make sure it has at least a BIOS password set for the occasion!
If airport security wants to check your laptop for whatever reason, tell them it belongs to a friend and you don't have the password.
Also no chance (or at least a lot less) for static discharge.

Several years ago I decided to always have the ATA password on every hard-drive in every laptop I have. And hibernate/turn it off when it's not in my possession. Laptops do get stolen, and this way it at least pretty much guarantee that 99.99% of the thieves would not be able to get to my personal data.

Well, that's a good way to get detained.
