Have I been scammed? T440p

#1 Post by Peppo » Sat Sep 21, 2019 9:38 am

Hi,
I've just bought online a used T440p from a guy.
The specs are:

- A-- grade, according to the photos
- I7-4710MQ CPU
- NVIDIA GT 730M GPU
- 1920x1080 IPS panel
- 8 GB RAM
- 500 GB HDD
- non-backlit keyboard
- DVD-RW
- battery in "good condition"
- webcam
- fingerprint reader
- 90W AC adapter

200€ + shipping

Later I discovered that, according to this document, the quad-core + NVIDIA version of the T440p came with a 135W AC adapter, not 90W.
He said it hasn't been modded, apart from the added RAM, and assured me about the specs, when asked specific questions about them.
The notebook is currently on its way to my home, but I'm worried that either I've been scammed or at least the actual specs are not those declared by the seller (maybe it's the non-dedicated GPU version? He said he's sure it has the NVIDIA chip, though).

Do you happen to have another plausible (and hopefully more reassuring) explanation for that?
What do you think about the price?

Thank you.

The price is good for those specs, and many of the nVidia machines came with a 90W charger from the factory.
No scamming there.

Even NVIDIA + quad-core configs? That document from Lenovo says it should be a 135W.
Assuming that the adapter he sent is a 90W, at least one of the facts below must be true:

1) The T440p he sent is not an (NVIDIA + quad-core).
2) He changed the 135W with a 90W.
3) That document from Lenovo doesn't always hold true.

I'm afraid for 1), I can accept 2), but I'm hoping/looking for confirmation for 3).

Your getting a bit paranoid, the AC adapter can change if the original one gets lost/stolen etc. Also it can change depending such as if it was ordered CTO. The specs check out as legit so I wouldn't worry. Just run Device Manager/System Information when you receive the machine to check it all out and you should be good to go.

And know that those PSREFs are never updated, once they have been published.

There is not a single quad-core+NVIDIA configuration with 90W adapter in that list. They all come with a 135W adapter, so this is actually fueling my worries. :D

At this point I see no reason to spend your time and nerves worrying, since the machine is already on its way. Get it and see; if the specs are wrong, you have a case to return it to the seller. If the adapter is 90W and you are not happy with it, just get a used genuine 135W adapter - I'm sure you can find one cheap.

I've found that the PSREF has been wrong a few times.
If the outfit is a recycler, most of the time they'll just get a bunch of random devices in a bin. Probably they might of just bundled the T440p with the 90W charger, and used the 135W T540p...

For all we know, it could be a CTO model that came with a 90W.
I would be more worried about the condition & specs, then battery life, than just the power cord.
It is quite frustrating to buy a laptop to find out it comes with a wrong or non-OEM charger.
I'd suspect you may be able to split the difference.

Actually I'm worried about the specs, not the adapter. I'm going to buy a docking station and a 135W adapter anyway.
Apparently the guy works for a very, very large company (at least that's what he hinted), so it might be a custom configuration that he got from the company's dismissed machines.
I don't know, I think I'll just have to wait and see... and of course I'll let you know.

I received the notebook, well packaged in a box from a ThinkPad L470 (?).
I must say it's in mint conditions. Not a scratch, A grade, even better than how it looked in the photos. Palmrest, keyboard and trackpad are not even barely worn. The TrackPoint rubber is missing, but I've already ordered a few. The guy told me he doesn't like it, so he must have had removed it (how rude, you heretic!). The notebook must be recent, or not much used: apart from the brand new conditions, SMART data from the stock 500 GB HDD report ~2600 hours of power-on time. That's about 7 hours per day for a year. The adapter turned out to be a genuine 90W by Lenovo, very recent (2018). The specs are consistent with what declared. I7 4710MQ + NVIDIA, and so on... it also has a WWAN card and the WiFi card is dual band. 57++ battery at ~75% of its health. The panel is a FHD LG LP140WF3-SPD1. It's as intact as the notebook itself, but it's not perfect: it has one small brighter spot and a smaller reddish one. They are barely noticeable though and only in uniform background conditions. I don't think I can complain about that, especially considering the price, what do you think?
Ran thorough diagnostic tests, inspected the inside, cleaned and updated the BIOS to the latest version on the pre-installed Windows installation (so that I can get rid of it ASAP). Now I'm playing with Manjaro while waiting for an SSD, T450 trackpad (the clunkpad is actually annoying), N140HCE-EN1 Rev C2 panel (it should be even better than the LG), BIOS flasher, and of course the TrackPoint rubbers. Next will come 16 GB of RAM and maybe a dock + 135W adapter. I will also repaste CPU and GPU. I already love it.
It looks like, for once, I've been lucky... for what it's worth.
