ThinkPad T460P, My First ThinkPad and I have questions

Hello All, This is my first post here. I just joined the ThinkPad community by buying a beautiful little T460P on ebay. This little ThinkPad has the i7 7820HQ CPU, Nvidia GPU, and 32 GB of RAM. I am very, very happy with this machine but I do have a couple of questions.

This particular machine is running an old fashioned 2.5 inch SSD. I have seen a few of these T460P's running the newer style M.2 SSD. Can a person set up a T460P to run both an M.2 SSD as a boot device and a 2.5 inch SSD as a storage device? Also, I have installed Hardware Monitor from CPUID and I have checked my temps and my CPU seems to be running in the 80 degree celsius range when it at idle with just a couple of programs open. Is this too high?

Like I said, I am brand new to the ThinkPad world but I love it. I plan to buy a second little ThinkPad to run Linux on, or I might even install Linux on this machine when I actually get comfortable with this machine. I actually have questions about Windows related Lenovo specific software, but I will wait to ask those questions after I figure out a couple of other things first.

Thank you,

Rocky Bennett

You can put an M.2 2242 SATA III SSD in the WWAN slot (above the main HDD/SSD).
Lenovo even lists one in the frubom/partslist: 00JT094 128G,M.2,2242,SATA6G,LTON,STD
The above does NOT apply to T460 and T460s, ONLY T460p.

As for temps, I would recommend to carefully remove the fan, clean the old gunk from CPU and fan, using Isopropyl alcohol, and apply fresh thermal paste, preferably the (not cheap) Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut.

Thank you. I will be monitoring the tempurature closely before I actually attempt that job, but I am concerned. Also, thank you for the information regarding adding a second SSD to my ThinkPad. I have another question.

If I were to perform a clean install of Windows 10, can I download all of the necessary Lenovo software from their site or do I need to purchase some kind of recovery disc. Right now I have;

Lenovo Service Bridge set up
system update 5.07.0088
Lenovo active n1msk20w

stored on a separate hard drive. Will these help me if I want to perform a clean install of Windows 10?

Thank you,

Rocky

I'm dead against W10, but that's just me.
Maybe someone else will chime in.

That is why I was asking about performing a clean install of Windows 10 is because I really want to run Fedora. If I run Fedora in my machine, I want to make sure that I can do a clean install of Windows 10 later "just in case."

After a clean install of Windows 10 on the T460p, it should activate automatically and will install most of the key drivers (particularly the wireless driver). Download the Lenovo Vantage application (does mostly the same thing as, and I think replaces, the older service bridge and system update). Then download and run the Lenovo USB Recovery Creator application.
