Just ordered a T430 - few noob questions?

#1 Post by IBM_Nut » Sat Mar 28, 2020 9:24 am

Just purchased a used T430, paid £160 including delivery. Didn’t think that wasn’t too bad for an i7.

It’s an i7 3520M 8GB RAM with 500GB Nvidia 5400M 1440x900 and 64GB mSata SSD, WIN 10 and comes with 2nd disk bay, also 9 cell battery complete with charger.

I will be using it to run auto diagnostics and will replace my T30 and current X61T as the X61T seems a little slow even with 4GB max ram on a 32bit and 512gb SSD.

Question 1: I am told the locking catch does not work on 2nd drive. Any idea if an easy fix?

Question 2: I notice a part of the side plastic is broken which I would like to replace. Where can I find a parts diagram to pull up the part number. See photo below.

Question 3: Is there anything else I should consider upgrading or mods, accessories? I will be changing to 512gb Samsung SSD and looking at upgrading to 16GB RAM.
Would the 8GB that’s in it now be 2x 4GB or 1x 8GB?

Looks to me like the broken plastic is around the CPU fan exhaust vent. Probably have to replace the entire base. Not worth the trouble IMHO.

The 8GB RAM is most likely 2x4GB, because 8GB sticks are rather expensive. I have 2x4GB RAM in my T430 also, and looked into upgrading to 16GB a little while back, but decided the RAM upgrade would cost more than I had paid for the entire laptop, so decided I to be happy with 8GB.

2x8 GB are dropping in price, they can had for around $60. The locking latch pieces can be transplanted from another T400s-thru-T430 (CS09) model.

Thanks. Looks like it’s part of the base so will order a new one and swap it out.

I actually have 2x Crucial 8GB DDR3 (16GB total) here from an old 2012 MacBook Pro, it’s 1333Mhz. Will this work? I see crucial say 1600Mhz. If it works, is there much difference in performance vs 1600Mhz?
