T530 vs T540

#1 Post by cadillacmike68 » Mon Mar 30, 2020 7:14 pm

Hi, I'm thinking of getting a newer T-series, primarily because the duma$$es at UNintuitive and hrblockhead are making their tax prep sw not install-able in a win7 pro system.

What are the major differences between the T530 and T540. I found out that the docks are different, but are the screens the same (within the same resolution, of course)?
Memory type, both DDR3 or not?
Do they all have cameras in the lid?
Video port outputs?
Drive bay and wired / wireless Ethernet adapters?

The screens are not the same and neither are the connectors.

FHD panels found in T/W540 are garbage unlike the previous ones which were very decent for TN.

Thanks, good to know. So T530s are better built I take it.

I'm not really looking at an FHD 1920x1080. Even the WUXGA 1920x1200 on this T61p I have has too small lettering for my blind a$$$ed eyes. I was originally looking at FWXGA (1366x768) but will look at HD+ 1600x900 which is close to the WSXGA+ 1680x1050 on several of my T61s. I can actually see those screens if I bump up the text size by 10-15% in winblows and Firefox.

I use external monitors WUGA or WSXGA+ in 24" and 22" so the laptop's native resolution is not critical. I think I even have a 16x9 22" that I can attach a T530 to. for a larger screen with better resolution.

When we were still living in USA, we had a local woman do our taxes every year, for $60 a pop.
Among other things, every year we also got a refund of $250 property tax.
Beats buying a new laptop.

That's a good price, but I have to prepare corporate taxes (1120 series forms), and the personal taxes are quite complex as well. The corporate tax program from hrblockhead is not much more than the $60 above, and it also includes the most featured personal (1040series forms) that I use not only for myself but for my family, so the cost is negligible (and is a business expense). The UNintuitIVE one costs more than double and is separate from the personal version which makes it triple, so that's a non-starter for me.

I don't want to get a new machine (a T530 isn't quite "new" in any event), but it will get the job done this year and going forward.
