New user of T440p on the way home

#1 Post by devinfriday » Fri Jun 12, 2020 4:47 am

Hi,
my first Thinkpad is on the way home, i've read tons of guide, lot of videos etc. My unit will come with some dead pixel and TN basic panel and i'm having trouble finding a good seller on ebay for the IPS panel. Anyone has bought the exact model (AUO or LG type) from someone who ships in EU? Anyone ever tried Aliexpress?
TIA

Hi there,
I purchased my first 440P earlier this year and spent a long time agonising over a replacement screen. In the end, I took the plunge and ordered an N140HCA-EAB listed as, and arriving as, a ChiMei InnoLux panel. The reason I struggled to make a choice is that most of the adverts on Ebay said the
supplied panel may not from the stated manufacturer but from a list of other "top" brands. The other thing was the pixel policy which from my supplier was Class 1. In my case I received the correct panel, for £45.38 as I'm in the UK, and it had no missing or stuck pixels and the difference against the original is like night and day. Another concern was whether the brightness would be adjustable and it is with this one. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links to a specific supplier or if I can PM the details. Maybe someone could confirm that. I'm in no way connected to the supplier by the way just happy with my laptop. Your mileage might vary. After doing various upgrades, I'm happy that it's the best laptop I've ever had. A quick edit, I forget to mention the panel supplier ships to Europe.

That is a link for someone who sells the dreaded "compatibles", probably/hopefully not the one that you bought from!

I have replaced the tn panel in 2 T440ps with this model ips screen - Chimei Innolux N140HCE-EN1. One panel was Rev C4 and the other Rev C5. It is not an original factory Lenovo panel, but is a superb replacement. I bought them both from Ali Express (link https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3282194 ... 4c4dBSyWFA). It is a drop in replacement using the existing cable.
T430 ips, T440p.

Are the 'compatible' panels really that bad? Even the lowest quality 1920x1080 IPS panel is going to be a step up from the original TN panel your laptop shipped with. I tried to find a reputable supplier for weeks before giving up. I took a chance on the cheapest ebay listing for an IPS panel and it turned out to be an Innolux N140HCE-EN1. It wasn't advertised as such, so that was a nice surprise. Sure it doesn't have the colour range of a B140HAN01.x, but without the opportunity to compare them side by side, I doubt I'll ever notice the difference.
I got the impression that the 'compatible' sellers were just sending out whatever panel they could currently get their hands on.

Some sellers can be contacted to make sure they can send an exact model. Two of two i have talked with tells me they can't send it, so i passed 'em.

I am using a "compatible" WUXGA for the LQ154M1LW2A that RealBlackStuff recommends often - with others - in the forum. In a weaker moment I had glossed over the small print rider "subject to availability, a compatible model will be provided" that I typically hunted for and avoided from online auctions. It was a UK seller, and with P&H was still cheaper than new "compatibles" on offer here in Oz. Well, I was, and continue to be pleasantly surprised in some 2 months of near-daily use of my T440p. Loving the backlit keyboard, mSATA drive and I put in an extra SSD with an Ultrabay. Replaced the HDD with an SSD and swapped out the stock trackpad with an ALPS buttoned trackpad. No dramas with that, even though I was prepared for issues being non-Synaptic (re https://octoperf.com/blog/2018/11/07/th ... ers-guide/). Win10 is actually not a bad environment, in this machine. *If Only* the T440p were compatible with my 2503 Advanced Dock ;) Happy Trails to you!

EDIT: Just to chime in, I am pretty sure mine was also a ChiMei InnoLux that rinky mentioned.

EDIT: Oops I forgot a tricky issue with the new Alps trackpad buttons, described in a workaround here viewtopic.php?p=846473#p846473

Good tip RBS - and I like the suggested modification you have mentioned elsewhere about improving airflow on the 40A2.
(Imagine if the Lenovo designers would just read and respond to all the feedback on these community forums when developing new products? How awesome would that be?)

If there are no keys (who needs them anyway), make sure it is unlocked.

The baby is here! Because the clunkpad does not work properly (no click at all) the seller refund me 25€. With that, i can order a "real" trackpad with buttons. Panel is ok to be a TN, no dead pixel. Main drive replaced with SSD, ordered 4Gb ram and an Ultrabay caddy for the second drive. Next move find an IPS panel and a mSata ssd for booting Linux. Very happy with it.
