Win 7 32 on external hd -- T450s with windows 10 inside

#1 Post by gianry » Sun Aug 16, 2020 10:14 am

Hi,
I've a Lenovo T450s with win 10 pro . i need to use some software installed on a win7 32 bit (hd removed from an old lenovo laptop )
I've attached the external hd to usb pot of the t450s but it reboot continously.
Is there something to check to use the external hd with win7 32bit ?

thanks

You wont be able to boot your W7 hdd because it wont have the necessary drivers installed for your newer laptop. Options are to just plug in the hdd after W10 has booted and grab the software if you can from the old disk. You might even be able to run it without installing it, worth a try anyway.
Generally you can set the desired boot device in the BIOS or by hitting F12 after POST.
Have you got that feeling that you should have kept the old machine.

I've read there is something to do with UEFI and BIOS boot process
Old machine (SL500) has Bios while new machine ( T450s) has UEFI.

You can change BIOS to also use the 'old' way.
Go in BIOS to Startup/Uefi/Legacy boot and set it to Both/Legacy first.
Then put your old HDD/SSD with W7 in if possible.

0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
Did you put the W7 disk inside?
Also try changing the Config/USB setting in BIOS

Yes , the tried hard drives have windows 7 pro inside . They regularly boot inside another laptop
I ve set the legacy only boot and legacy first

Do you mean to change usb UEFI bios support to Disabled ?

Try removing your internal boot disk and putting your W7 disc in the machine, if it has SATA, and select to boot from it. This will prove if its possible to boot or not.

I’ve tried another sata to usb adaptor . Either T450s or sl500 laptop doesn’t boot from external usb storage .
The same hard drive works well inside

is there some software to clone the Windows partition in a usb drive ?

To get W7 going, you could put an M.2 SSD in the WWAN-slot, such as this:
https://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/mydig ... -sb2-0256/
and clone/reinstall W7 onto it.
You can then choose via F12 from which drive to boot: main-drive or WWAN-drive.

At this point, it might be better to install an M.2 2242 SATA SSD on the T450s WWAN slot and just install Windows 7 there.

no, that solution isnt good for me as I'vbe a WWAN module on my T450s

In any way I've found the solution. it is necessary to clone the windows 7 system from hard drive to another usb drive with specific cloning software

I'll go to try in the next few days
