ThinkPad T430u design flaw?

#1 Post by kfzhu1229 » Mon Aug 24, 2020 5:28 pm

Yesterday my mum handed me her T430u saying that the fan is loud. So what I did was I take the thing apart and then cleaned off the heatsink and also lubed the fan (It's the delta fan which can come apart and get lubed). The problem did go away.
However, I noticed that the keyboard chassis is really flimsy. I know this is an ultrabook, but what happens is if you press down hard enough on where the Q key on the keyboard is, the keyboard bends down far enough to seize up the fan! You can hear the fan rubbing against the keyboard if you do so!
Also, despite this machine only being like 3 years old (yes this machine is bought new quite a few years after its introduction), the CMOS battery is TOTALLY dead. I measured a grand total of 0.3V on the battery! It doesn't really do much in an ultrabook since you won't be taking off the main battery on a regular basis but I am surprised at it dying this quickly!
Is there anyone else with a T430u that has this problem? I thought this kind of problem is unacceptable on a ThinkPad.

T430u is a rather obscure model and experimental as Ultrabooks were not yet mainstream back then. Even normal ThinkPads of this era are considered, by many legacy users, of worse quality than prior models, while other people will say they are of worse quality than succeeding models. Costs were likely cut in favor of thinning out the unit, and it's probably figured that purchasers of an expensive shiny laptop will not go out of their way to abuse the material in search of flaws like the one. I can bend my T420 hard enough to break it if I wanted too, anyone can to any laptop, just don't.

Well I am starting to suspect that that fan noise she's having is actually due to one hand handling and then press down that Q key like that.
And you are right about it being an experiment, with the palmrest removed the bottom chassis is actually painfully soft, it is like as if this is a Lenovo ideapad!
I think this is the reason why they switched to using metal bottom chassis later...

The T400/T500/W500 had keyboard support brackets.
Maybe you can find/make one similar, to reinforce the T430U?
