T480 keyboard swap

#1 Post by Ianski » Sun Sep 20, 2020 12:06 am

I have a client that bought a T480 with a non-illuminated keyboard, and now wants to buy and swap in a keyboard with the illumination. In the HMM, the swap looks very easy - two screws and the keyboard pops out, then there's a connector to undo. Has anyone actually done this? Online at places like Amazon.ca, it looks like one can buy the part, a "Windu" keyboard FRU 01AX564, but warns to ensure that the mainboard supports backlighting before ordering. Is there a way to determine whether the mainboard has this capability without opening up the unit? Also, would replacing the keyboard (assuming if done at a professional computer repair shop) void the laptop's warranty? This machine is a T480 model 20L5.
Cheers!

All T480 machines are backlit-KB capable.
Swapping one does not void the warranty.
Just be VERY careful that you don't bust the flat-cable connector on the motherboard!

Thanks very much - I found a thread here that implies the same thing: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T ... =1#4237426
I've suggested they buy the correct FRU replacement through Amazon or eBay (Lenovo's own parts supplier indicates that this item isn't in stock), and then have either myself or some other tech to install it for them. Seems pretty low risk, aside from the possibility of breaking that connector!
Cheers!
