T430 won’t boot - dead battery, CMOS or board?

#1 Post by IBM_Nut » Sat Mar 27, 2021 11:33 am

Do I have a dead battery, CMOS battery, board?

I have a T430 and the last couple of times using I have struggled to turn on. Have got round it by mucking around by removing battery, plugging in charger multiple times. Eventually it has powered up. Now it’s completely dead. It won’t start at all.

NOW... it won’t boot, so plugged in charger and battery light flashes, sometimes it rapid flashes, then 2 flashes with a pause.

I thought it was CMOS so I have just relaxed that with a new one and still nothing.

I have tried starting computer without battery and plugged into the charger. I thought these would still turn on without the battery in. Is this not true?

I have tried to find a replacement ‘GENUINE’ battery 9 cell (70++) but I cannot find anyone selling one.
Seems a tonne of fakes and aftermarket version out there which concerns me.
I have tried to call Lenovo to ask if there is any genuine ones I can still buy from them but I just get cut off.
What’s the best alternative if there is no new original available these days?

Any help would be appreciated from you wide lot.
BTW - I am from the UK.

UPDATE:

Computer has been plugged into charger for 30+ mins now since replacing the new CMOS battery and I heard a beep. Computer has powered up now it seems.

Could this be by chance or because I replaced the CMOS battery and it takes a while for it to kick in?

Unplug anything plugged in, remove hard drive and ram, remove external battery. Insert 1 ram stick at a time and see if it reaches BIOS on AC only. If nothing happens with 1st slot, test 2nd by itself. If that works then try with battery. Finally reinstall hard drive and see what happens.

UPDATE:

I have tried the above and still not turning on.
Also I purchased a new battery and still nothing.

Any ideas? More serious than I thought.

I guess it may be time to look at how expensive T430 motherboards are on ebay
I would hope they are not that expensive..

I think this is an old thread but did you find out what's going on with yours? My t430 has the same issue and when I plug in the battery LED flashes several times then a pause then twice. Power button doesn't do anything, no POST, no LED, no fan noise at all. The only way I can get the computer to run on and boot into Windows is if I remove power adapter, battery, and CMOS battery, then hold the power button for 20 seconds, then as soon as I plug in the power cord the computer boots on its own, of course this is with the CMOS Checksm error. It boots into Windows every time if I do those steps. I too thought it's the CMOS battery so I bought a new one and the issue persists. As long as I don't restart the computer I can still use it, so weird.

No still not had time to take to someone to check. I think it is likely to be the motherboard.

I see, this is such a weird issue, I mean it has to be CMOS related. In my case as long as I perform that routine (remove power adapter, battery and CMOS battery, hold power button for 20 seconds) then the laptop can boot up just fine. It can even restart without any issues, but if I completely shut it down I will have to repeat that process to turn it back on. So I guess in a way I can still use the laptop, as you rarely have to shut it down completely........
