T430 display latch has to be manually closed?

#1 Post by 1kelpy » Thu May 13, 2021 10:04 pm

Hello there. I have a T430 and I have noticed that the display latch will be stuck 2/3 to the right in the open position, and I have to manually close the display latch after the laptop is opened. Is there anything I can do about this? It seems that the issue is stemming from the left side of the laptop, but I cannot see anything obviously wrong with the mechanism.
Thanks :D

There's a spring inside that can get bound up or stuck. It's unusual for it to do so on its own (I've had oopsies when reassembling systems where it gets stuck and need to re-seat the top cover) but I suppose anything is possible. To get at it you need to remove the entire palm rest/top cover assembly. It may not be worth it to you, but I digress.

Should've mentioned that this started happening after removing the palmrest to get at the CPU fan. I'll take a look it, Thanks!

Ok, so I figured out what was wrong with the display latch, but I'm going to have to order a new palmrest for something else wrong with the display latch.
What was wrong: It turns out that on the latch on the left side, there is a long piece of plastic / metal in the middle of the latch that was bent too far to the inside of the laptop, and was catching on the part of the palmrest that holds in the latch.
What went wrong: When I was reinstalling the palmrest, I accidentally removed the spring that provides the return force, and it is not going back in.
