T430 battery recommendation (Europe)

#1 Post by TitoLabieno » Sun May 01, 2022 10:27 am

Hello, I've been using a T430 for a while. It is pretty much maxed out (4-cores i7, FHD display, new SSD+mSATA SSD,...) and it is a joy to use it. I use it with a big 9-cell battery which is quite clunky and it is beginning to show its age.
Most of the time it is docked (battery threshold enabled), but from time to time I need it on the go, and it is certainly heavy with that battery. It doesn't last that much unfortunately. The design capacity is 94Wh according to Vantage and the current capacity is 40Wh even though it only has 50 cycles. Do you think it is expected for it to be in that condition? I would expect it to be in better shape with that number of cycles - but I don't know how was it used/stored before I adquired it, this T430 was bought second hand.

Second, I'm thinking about buying a small 6-cell battery (the model that is smaller and doesn't protrude), but given the T430 has a whitelist and OEM batteries are old at this point, it is tricky to get a new one. Have you recently bought a new one? Can you recommend me any reputable seller?

Cycles doesn't count that much if the battery is 10+ years old.

I'd recommend you to get a original 6-cell in your hands and re-cell it with the best quality cells you can find. I went to a local battery store with the Samsung cells and they spot welded them for 20 €. After welding you just need to jump wire to wake up the battery again:

You can go even more further and reprogram the safety chip, but I didn't do it and it works normally. Reprogramming would update the mAh and reset the cycle count.

Yes, re-celling the battery would be really cool indeed. Unfortunately, there's no battery-specialized stores here (at least that I am aware of) and it is quite complex to get that done. I don't feel comfortable doing that kind of stuff either. I'd rather buy a good enough third party battery which I can use out of the box, I know some people bought those kind of batteries and they are okay (given OEM batteries are quite old). However I don't know which one to get.
