T470 Custom Fn+ Shortcuts?

#1 Post by Jake.Werecat » Tue May 03, 2022 6:13 pm

So I recently switched from T430 to T470. I generally have very pleasant experience so far, regardless previous hesitations and find new machine superior to old ones in many aspects. There are however a few things that I just can't go along with.
1)Missing Volume Up / Down physical keys. I could rumble for hours how stupid removing them was, as I use them like 100 times a day, and have to hold Fn each time and look carefully to find the proper F2 or F3 button... But nothing can be done with it, so I just have to live with it moaning.
2)Second thing on the other hand, though less annoying, can be helped somehow (or at least I believe it can). T430 had those useful Fn+F10 previous track, Fn+F11 play/pause and Fn+F12 next track shortcuts. T470 has... I don't know what. Basically some rubbish functions I never use. I'm wondering if it would be possible to assign a Fn+ whatever to previous/next track and play/pause?

If the LED in the Fn key is ON, hold down Fn and press Esc/FnLk, it should now go OFF.
Now you can use the F1-F12 pictured functions without the Fn key.

For other key options, see this.

I am well aware, but that's not an option, as this way there are no functional F1-F12 keys anymore, no Alt+F4 for closing, no F2 for rename, no F3 for search, no F5 for refresh, no F11 for full-screen and so on, and so on. F's are super useful.

Thanks, I'll dive into that.

I read suggested article, but none of those applications mentioned seem to support Fn+something. I was thinking of making Fn+ left arrow - previous and Fn+ right arrow next track....

I dived into AutoHotKey a little deeper, but to no avail. The "Fn"key is visible to AHK, it's registered as SC163, but it cannot work as a modifier, because when holding it and pressing a second key (be it an arrow, key or a random letter key) both keystrokes are suppressed (probably by the EC), and don't reach the OS.
For now I'm using Right Alt but I'd still love to figure out the way to do it. This definitely is doable, because T25 keyboard has this very shortcuts I'd love to have too. So the functionality is probably even embedded in BIOS / EC. The question is, how to access it.

If you got money to spare, put a T25 keyboard+bezel in your T470.

I would have done that long time ago, had they been available! The only keyboard I've come across available for sale was nordic/viking layout, and the bezel, power button and palmrest - are basically Unobtainium.

If this is windows you can use Win+1 through 9 to launch the first 9 tiles in the Taskbar. I put a shortcut to the Power Manager Plan selection program as the second tile (I use windows 7).

Thanks, but that's something entirely different. I Don't want to launch anything, and I don't have anything pinned to the taskbar (I prefer clean look of the interface). Also with Win key one can make any hotkey/macro/shortcut one could possibly think of using AutoHotKey.
I'm trying to bring back the old shortcuts that used to be standard on almost all ThinkPads throughout the years i.e.
Fn+Right Arrow = Next track
Fn+Left arrow = Previous Track

On my anachronistic keyboards I do Control+Shift+Arrow for media keys, I set it in my media player (Winamp). It sucks but gotta get by somehow.

I set it up for Right Alt + arrows with autohotkey, yet still I'd like to use Fn instead like I did for the last 10 years.
