T530 only turned on if charger is plugged.

#1 Post by DLinks1292 » Sat Jun 11, 2022 12:27 pm

2 days ago I bought a T530 dual GPU model with i7-3720QM in it, seller said the battery is broken, which confirmed when i test the battery on my T420, then I proceed to buy an aftermarket battery for T420 (which cheaper than T430/T530 one) and while waiting for the battery is arrive, I flash ThinkPad EC mod (as I usually do for xx30 series) to remove battery whitelist.

The battery arrive today, I tested and its seems work both on my windows 10 and Linux Mint 20.2 XFCE (show battery precentage, and show it's charging). Everything seems normal until I unplugged the charger, I thought is the battery problem, then I tested it on both my T420 and my friend T430 that have EC unlocked, and the battery work flawlessly, I tried to back to stock firmware, reflash the EC, put an original T430 battery, etc, and the thing still not turned on without the charger. Any help will be appreciated!

*I'm tried both my 135W and 65W adapter.

I'm back with good news, I got in touch with my friend that specialize in ThinkPad hardware repair, he first suggest that the ThinkEngine Chip broken/refuse to accept battery power, and I decide to dismantle the whole unit. To my surprise, the plastic shield near battery receptacle is ripped, I proceed to remove the ripped plastic, after I check trough schematic, the F12 Fuse who's responsible to connect battery positive voltage to MOSFET are missing, my friend ask me to test if there's short near the charging circuit (because he said, there's something broken if someone has remove the fuse), I validate his claim by testing any traces that connected to the charging circuit, and found no problem. I proceed to install similar fuse (10A 24V SMD fuse) from a donor board, and yep, It's just fix my problem. The battery is charging normally, can turn on without a charger, and just works back to normal state.
