Decent 9 cell battery?

#1 Post by wrybread » Tue Jun 14, 2022 8:00 pm

Does anyone have a recommended source for a 9 cell battery? I know it's a bit of a crapshoot, but trying to increase my chances...

I guess up to $60 if it's a really good battery.

Also curious about cheapie $25 batteries.

I've always meant to wire up my own battery. With decent 18650 cells and a spot welder should be easy to make a really good battery.

That's the problem. Your laptop may not be worth much by now, but there is no reason to expect a new battery to match the depreciated price of your system. This is, a new battery costs the same to manufacture, no matter if it's destined to a brand new machine or to an old one. You're getting a new product and you should expect to pay accordingly. That's why you (usually) can't get decent batteries from China: they aren't meant to work the same as the original battery, but to keep old systems running for the minimum possible cost.

Bottom line: you get what you pay for.

If you are careful and fortunate you can find a working OEM battery on eBay.

I picked up a 9 cell OEM battery from this seller a few months ago.

That's how most of us around here get ours. But there is also a big risk of getting a dead one. Batteries stored for longer periods of time go bad often due to self-discharge. It has happened to me many times.

I'd suggest to look for a professional refurbishing company. They should be able to refurbish your existing battery with new cells. But if you want quality components don't count on getting that done for a low price. Like I said, you're getting new stuff and quality cells aren't exactly cheap.

I was eyeing this brand on Aliexpress, "Emerging". They promise to make batteries using Korean cells. If that's true, they may not be that bad. But still, I'd keep my expectations low if you go that route. The fact that most generic batteries doesn't even match the original capacity is quite a sign of their quality (cell technology keeps improving so a battery purchased years later should have higher capacity, not less).

I got a 6 cell for my T430 from this guy a couple of months ago:

Don't know if it truly is a "genuine" Lenovo battery but its working well so far!
