T450 in A.D 2023 ?

#1 Post by ajkula66 » Thu Nov 24, 2022 6:19 pm

No, not for myself... :D

Shopping for a friend with modest needs and a budget to match. Was offered a T450 in HD (no big deal for him), with a i5 5300U, 16GB of RAM and a 192GB SSD. The intended use is a desktop replacement 95% of the time, internet, Office, the most basic stuff.

Do you good people see this system as being to able to survive another 2-3 years or will it be rendered utterly obsolete even for these mundane tasks ?

Thankful I am for any wisdom that might be offered... :thumbs-UP:

I still use my quad core i7 T520 on a daily basis. For basic computer activities a T450 should be fine for another five or six years at least.

Yep, my own T520 - not even a QC - is still the daily driver around here as well.

My train of thoughts as well BUT I have zero experience with T450 when it comes to reliability, let alone with one running W10.

Many a thanks for replying, highly appreciated.... :thumbs-UP:

Up until last year I had an old dual core Mac mini that I used for media and internet. It gave me no trouble for those uses. I only upgraded to a newer mini because I wanted to get a 4k TV, which the newer mini does better.

A notebooks that moves more frequently likely increases the chances it will experience a hiccup. That's something to consider. A T520 is a nice machine, but 10 years old. It's easier to work on than the newer ThinkPads and I presume parts are cheaper. In my experience a lot of durability comes down to luck more than anything else. Given the modest budget, what else is better?

I'm sure a T450 will be fine for a regular user, not a ThinkPad fanatic (the classics are better for that). They can be had very inexpensively now.

My wife's laptop is a T450 with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD running Windows 10. Nice machine. It's a T series ThinkPad, after all. It works just dandy and we expect it to keep working for years to come.

Thanks for the heads up.... :thumbs-UP:

My buddy ended up choosing another (free) solution so all is well.

From what I have seen, people are worried too much about the production year of a machine. The best advice would be - try it. Most of the time, other factors contribute to user's experience far more than how old it is. For example I have a 2020 business class ultrabook, but I'm typing this on a i5 T420. And I do not prefer the T420 over a T601 Frankenpad, but it can run on battery 7 hours.
15 inch laptop would probably be better as a desktop replacement, if there was such a choice and similar price.
T420 -> W500 -> T601 Frankenpad -> X200s -> X330 -> modded T420

Agreed on all points.... :thumbs-UP:

Typing this on an X200s which is still my choice for "on the move" situations... :D
